The Student Volunteer Program at the U.S. Department of Labor

(DOL) provides students with enriching educational experiences, important insights into the operations of a large government department, and the tools needed to prepare for a career in public service, the private sector, non-profits, and other organizations. Participants in the program, including students who earn academic credit through existing university programs or who receive independent funding, help advance the mission of the Department to train workers for jobs, protect them in the workplace and safeguard their retirement savings. The Student Volunteer program is an unpaid opportunity.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated students to serve as non-paid student volunteers to assist in the performance of its mission. From June 4, 2018 - August 31, 2018, students will be exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn about the mission and the roles and responsibilities of the Department of Labor.

This position is located in the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs (DCSP) in the Office of Partnership and Recognition (OPR).

The mission of The Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs (DCSP) is to coordinate the agency's compliance assistance and outreach activities, coordinates the agency's relations with state plan states, and oversees international issues for OSHA.


The organization above is looking for student volunteers to perform various duties, such as:

Assist senior staff with the duties such as the review and analysis of VPP reports (approval, reapproval, termination appeals, etc.), OSP agreement and OSP annual evaluations.

Assist with interpretations of VPP/OSPP/Challenge, SGE policies and procedures, and make recommendations to management on outstanding issues.

Stay informed of regional events and issues and informs management of regional and policy issues and offers recommendations for solutions.

Assist in the preparation of presentations, speeches, outreach material and other tools designed to promote safety and health program management and cooperative programs.

Assist in the preparation of materials and attends meetings, conferences, and seminars with public and private sector organizations and other groups to promote cooperative programs and/ or to discuss their impact on worker safety and health.

To be considered for the Summer Student Volunteer Internship, you must apply via the on-line application. Student must maintain student eligibility and enrollment before and throughout the duration of the internship. (Be actively enrolled at an accredited institution not less than half-time). Graduated students may not volunteer beyond his/her graduation date without proof of future enrollment in an accredited university.
