**The Iowa City Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare System (ICVAHCS) is currently seeking applications for one (1) full-time, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (Mental Health) . ICVAHCS is located within the Veterans Integrated Service Network 23 (VISN 23).

Responsibilities

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist (Mental Health) works assures the safe, appropriate, cost effective use of drugs in psychiatric patients through the application of specialized knowledge and the use of judgment in the collection and interpretation of data specific to each patient and in tactful interactions with other health care professionals. The incumbent will provide accurate and relevant drug information and literature analysis to health care professionals, and acts as a therapeutic consultant on matters of a high degree of complexity. The incumbent shares responsibility of Medication Use Evaluation with appropriate health care providers and actively participates in the quality assurance programs. The functions of the position center around six critical areas which include:

medication use evaluation

teaching and research

adverse drug reactions

security

Physical Requirements:

The work of this position is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing, twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding or carrying of light items. Pharmacists must be able to distinguish between colors. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Proficient in spoken and written English.

Full, current, and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

(1) Graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree. Verification of approved degree programs may be obtained from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, 20 North Clark Street, Suite 2500, Chicago, Illinois 60602-5109; phone: (312) 664-3575, or through their Web site at: http://www.acpe-accredit.org/ (NOTE: Prior to 2005 ACPE accredited both baccalaureate and Doctor of Pharmacy terminal degree program. Today the sole degree is Doctor of Pharmacy.)

(2) Graduates of foreign pharmacy degree programs meet the educational requirement if the graduate is able to provide proof of achieving the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission (FPGEC) Certification, which includes passing the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT).

Completion of 1 year of creditable experience as a Pharmacist at the GS-12 level or equivalent, OR completion of a two year post Pharm.D. fellowship in a clinical or specialized program.

Ability to demonstrate in writing, the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to communicate orally and in writing to persuade and influence clinical and management decisions.

Expert understanding of regulatory and quality standards for their program area.

Ability to solve problems, coordinate and organize responsibilities to maximize outcomes in their program area or area of clinical expertise.

Expert knowledge of a specialized area of clinical pharmacy practice or specialty area of pharmacy.

Advanced skill in monitoring and assessing the outcome of drug therapies, including physical assessment and interpretation of laboratory and other diagnostic parameters.

Preferred Experience:

While neither is a requirement to be considered for the position, An ASHP-accredited residency (PGY-2) in Psychiatry and Board Certification in Psychiatric are both desirable.
