This position is located in the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Immediate Office of the Superintendent, Office of Admissions, Kings Point, New York. The Academy is a four-year degree granting institution of higher education accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities. The mission of the Academy is to teach students how to succeed in the maritime and transportation industries or the Armed Forces, while preparing them to receive a bachelor of science degree, a merchant marine license, and an appointment as a commissioned officer on reserve or active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide financial assistance to students. Approximately 30% of all students receive financial aid.
This position is perfect for a mid-career professional who is looking for an opportunity to counsel students and parents of their financial eligibility, actual awards, and on the management of their loan/debt, as well as the most effective methods for utilizing the financial aid they are eligible to receive.
The Mission of the United States Merchant Marine Academy is to educate and graduate licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war.

As a Financial Aid Specialist, you will:
Serve as the principal coordinator and contact point for all financial aid matters at the Academy.
Manage the entire financial aid operation, establishing initial contact with incoming students, assisting them with the financial aid application process, drawing down required information from the U.S. Department of Education, analyzing financial need, exercising professional judgment (as required), awarding financial aid loans and grants (as applicable), providing oversight of the distribution of financial aid, and (as appropriate) the return of excess funds to midshipmen.
Provide guidance/recommendations, based on student financial need, to assist the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid with decisions on awarding all need-based scholarships controlled by the Academy.
Manage the accuracy and currency of the Admissions and Financial Aid information on the USMMA website, making revisions whenever necessary and providing appropriate links to related sites in order to maximize the utility of the site.
Serve as a liaison with the Information Technology Department, and supporting special IT needs (reports, etc.) of Admissions Department staff.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Education alone, you must have:
At least 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or
Has been awarded a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
