The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center is located in beautiful Palm Beach County, on a 69 acre site just minutes from local Atlantic Ocean beaches. The Medical Center is a dynamic medical center serving approximately 65,000 veterans in southeast Florida. There are a total of 134 operating beds, including 120 sub-acute and long-term beds, and a high volume ambulatory care program, including 6 community based outpatient centers in outlying counties. State of the art primary and secondary treatment modalities and electronic medical record support a managed care model of health care delivery.

Responsibilities

Duties

The individual will serve as the Chief of the Emergency Department and reports directly to the Chief of Staff. The Chief of Emergency Department is responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations of the Emergency Department, maintaining professional, technical, and supervisory knowledge, competencies and skills to deliver effective, efficient, and high quality medical care to Veterans at the Emergency Department, West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. The individual will be responsible for direct supervision of all assigned Emergency Department personnel and the Occupational Health physician. The ED Chief will ensure department compliance with all VHA, OIG, TJC, and other regulatory requirements, standards, and performance measure.

The Service Chief physician must demonstrate the following:

(a) Outstanding professional ability to oversee daily operation of ED;

(b) Current competence in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty;

(c) Supervisory oversight both clinically and administratively

(b) (d) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, quality and performance improvement.

Supervising Administrative components of patient care management including but not limited to:

Teaching subordinate staff, residents and students.

Overseeing educational programs for the ED personnel as well as the medical staff.

Ensuring service participation in monitoring the quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care.

Demonstrating ethical conduct and serving as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.

Ensuring quality assurance programs and chart reviews are being conducted in accordance with established procedure/process

Miscellaneous activities can include:

Attending or overseeing committee assignments, QA activities, and other special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the West Palm Beach VAMC Executive Leadership team. Participating in, and attending, CME activities and VA continuing educational activities.

Work Schedule: 8:00AM to 4:30PM and 24/7 coverage

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Experience managing or overseeing the day to day operations of an Emergency Department and Board certification in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery or Family Practice; supervisory experience with managing personnel

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
