These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area is April through October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2018 Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee. Responsibilities Works independently in performing carpentry and dry stone masonry in trail rehabilitation and construction projects. Operates vehicles and trails specific equipment and tools. Independently inspects trails. Follow detailed written instructions or work orders and oral instructions. Follow established safety protocol and policies. Leads or teaches lower grade employees and\/or volunteers in trail maintenance and construction. Independently performs dry stone masonry and rock work in trail construction and rehabilitation and applications. Independently inspects trail and recognizes corrosion control and analysis of drainage patterns. Operates and maintains tools and equipment such as shovels, rock bars, sledgehammers, pulaskis, pick, and mcleods to perform trails maintenance and grounds upkeep. Operate a variety of power tools such as chainsaws, rock drills, string trimmers, various rigging equipment including griphoists and carpentry tools. . Who May Apply This job is open to\u2026 US Citizens Requirements Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision(SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation repair, etc. Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of measuring instruments Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc. (includes blueprinting reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Knowledge of materials If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years. Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must have not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small number of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trails work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and buckling trees, and working around machinery.
