This position is located in Region 6, on the Olympic National Forest, in the Forest Supervisor’s Office in Olympia, Washington.

The incumbent serves as the Invasive Plant Coordinator, and is responsible for planning, implementing, developing, and coordinating the Olympic National Forest’s Invasive Plant Program. Strong candidates will have excellent organizational skills and possess a working knowledge of native and non-native plant species of the Pacific Northwest.

A portion of this position is field-going that often requires considerable walking, bending, stooping, and climbing frequently over various terrain while carrying spray equipment. Chemicals will be used in the treatment of invasive plant species; the incumbent will be required to obtain and maintain a Washington state pesticide applicator license.

This position has a seasonal work schedule where full-time work is guaranteed for 18 pay periods (36 weeks) and when not working, employee is placed in non-pay/non-duty status.

The Invasive Plant Coordinator serves as the technical expert for the invasive plant program on the Forest.

The Invasive Plant Coordinator plans, directs, develops and coordinates the invasive non-native plant species program through formulation of short and long term plans, policies and program guidelines in order to achieve Forest, Regional, and National goals and objectives.

Implements and oversees management plans and partnerships for the control of invasive plant species and establishment of native vegetation; implements invasive control activities using a variety of methods including chemical, mechanical, manual, and biological methods.

The Invasive Plant Coordinator is the technical expert in managing noxious/invasive weeds within plant communities, and works cooperatively with staff on the forest to determine the program of work.

Conducts work independently and with Forest Service personnel, as well as County, State, Federal, and Tribal partners on noxious and invasive weed management on the Forest.

Assists and directs unit personnel, contract personnel, partners, and/or volunteers in conducting invasive plant inventory, monitoring and treatment.

Serves as primary work leader for temporary employees performing work at the GS-03/04/05 level.

Ensures that all phases of invasive plant management are conducted in a safe and responsible manner, and instills a “culture of safety” in all personnel, partners and volunteers conducting this work.

The prospective applicant should have:

• Knowledge of native and non-native plant species of the Pacific Northwest;

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of invasive plant management, botany and plant ecology;

• Strong organizational skills and leadership ability;

• Confidence to present technical information to natural resource specialists and the general public;

• A willingness to seek funding internally and externally to meet program goals;

• Desire to work collaboratively with a wide range of professional and technical colleagues, departments, agencies, partners and contractors;

Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelors or higher degree that included a major field of study in: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.

- OR

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying.


In addition to the requirements described above, the following additional education and/or experience are required for the grade(s) specified.

GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Participated in minor phases of planning, organizing, and implementing an invasive plant or other natural resource management related program. Prepared reports on progress and results of land management activities related to invasive plants/botanical species. Received training in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological and public use data, or other information pertinent to the resource projects, research studies and/or scientific investigations.

Education: one full year of graduate level education leading to a degree such as Botany/Plant Science

- OR

Superior Academic Achievement (go to this site determine if you are eligible: The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Combination of Education and Experience: an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

GS-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Examples of the specialized experience include: Provided technical assistance and recommendation to staff pertaining to land management activities on native and non-native plant species and/or communities. Collected and summarized data relating to studies of plant community and vegetation management, including providing reports, observations and recommendations. Participated in evaluating and monitoring of invasive plant/ botanical species by locating, surveying, identifying, and recording information to meet environmental assessment and botanical baseline data requirements.

Education: masters or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such degree such as Botany/Plant Science.

- OR

Combination of education and experience: an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
