The Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) (Cardiac Catheterization) circulates, scrubs, monitors, and operates equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for critically ill patients. The incumbent assures medications are properly labeled and available for physician administration. He/she should possess a functional knowledge of the cardiac medications use, appropriate doses, and side effects. He/she works with the physician to complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including: LHC, RHC, PTCAs, Stent placement, IABP, IVUS, pressure wires, percardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, permanent pacemaker placement and AICD placement.

Work Schedule: Full Time, Compressed Tour with On-Call responsibility

The MIT (Cardiac Catheterization) assists with training and mentoring other technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiology fellows.

The incumbent assists the cardiology manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.

The incumbent is expected to monitor the progression of procedures requiring independent judgment and anticipate need to provide specific instrument and/or catheters.

The Cardiac Catheterization Technician has the intimate knowledge of vascular and coronary anatomy and physiology related to cardiovascular function.

Incumbent cross covers the Heart Station when needed to provide coverage to perform 12 Lead EKG, Holter Monitor Recording and Analysis, Pacemaker and Defibrillator analysis, Exercising Testing.

Incumbent is responsible for adhering to all departmental, service, hospital, agency, and national regulations and policies.

Incumbent performs other duties as assigned.

English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Education or Training. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels.

Preferred Experience: Monitoring of Heart Rhythm Normal and abnormal.

Monitoring of Hemodynamics with capabilities to understand normal and abnormal.

Monitoring oxygen saturations and the calculation of Cardiac OutPut and Index via Fick and thermodilution.

Scrubbing and prepping patients for procedures utilizing aseptic technique. Maintains a sterile field.

RCIS or RCIS eligible certification in order to validate knowledge and skills that one has received through education or on the job training.

Know Radiation Safety and practices the safety skills in order to protect candidate, patient and other staff present during the procedure.

Knowledge of positioning of patient and camera in order to obtain the various images for catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.

Knowledge of usage of emergency equipment in the Cath lab defibrillators/ Temporary pacemakers/ Intra-Aortic balloon pumps.

Ability to be onsite within 30 minutes while on emergency call.

Certification. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable.

Grade Determinations:

GS-8: Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to scrub, circulate, and monitor advanced procedures (including electrophysiological) to include rotoblation, intravascular ultrasound, RADI or wave-wire, angiojet, filter wires, myocardial biopsies EPS, permanent pacemaker insertions, AICD insertions, and biventricular pacemaker insertion.

2. Advanced knowledge of equipment, medications, and supplies used in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and the ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and troubleshoot this equipment.

3. Knowledge and understanding of wave forms from the great vessels and all chambers of the heart including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician of an impending life-threatening situation.

4. Knowledge of quality control and performance improvement indicators for the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and ability to prepare and analyze quality control of test results.
