Our Public Health Veterinarians are valued members of a dynamic team. Most importantly, you are in a pivotal role from day one and your work has visible impact. You will:
• Plan, organize, coordinate and adapt the full range of meat and poultry inspection operations in slaughter and/or processing establishments;
• Ensure establishments meet requirements of the Pathogen Reduction and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations;
• Oversee consumer protection, non-food safety concerns such as proper labeling and packaging;
• Serve as team leader who works with and supervises other public health professionals to ensure establishments under our jurisdiction comply with sanitation standards and properly implement systems that control hazards from entering the food supply;
• Enforcing Federal meat and poultry inspection procedures prior to slaughter and throughout the entire establishment, including humane handling, ante-mortem inspection, post-mortem inspection, processing operations, veterinary dispositions, and transportation and distribution of meat, poultry, and egg products to markets and retail stores.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT FOR THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). GS-12: You must meet the educational requirement and you must meet the specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level. You must have completed 52 weeks or more of post D.V.M. progressively responsible professional veterinary work experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service.
Applicants can also substitute education for specialized experience at the GS-12 level by meeting one of the educational requirements shown below in addition to having a DVM or equivalent degree.
Successfully attained a Master's degree in an area of specialization* (i.e., veterinary toxicology, laboratory animal medicine, poultry veterinary medicine, etc.) or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position.
Successfully attained a Ph.D. degree in any of the specialties* (i.e., veterinary toxicology, laboratory animal medicine, poultry veterinary medicine, etc.) or related sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position.
Successfully completed all requirements for Diplomat status in an ABVS-recognized veterinary specialty* (i.e., veterinary toxicology, laboratory animal medicine, poultry veterinary medicine, etc.) organization.
Successfully completed two years of a post graduate internship; residency program; or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position.
