Responsibilities

This position is located in Cheyenne, WY reporting to Veteran Transportation Services (VTS) at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center. As the Motor Vehicle Operator, you will responsible for operating a 14-passenger van, a wheelchair van and sedans to transport patients and/or supplies. You will inspect vehicles prior to and after using insuring that the vehicle is safe for yourself and all other passengers, reporting minor and major issues to the appropriate personnel. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Driving passengers in shuttle vans or other vehicles according to the route and time schedule;

Selects alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic or other delaying conditions;

Read maps in order to reach unfamiliar or desired locations;

Vehicle inspections before and after transporting passengers;

Maintains cleanliness of vehicle;

Operates wheelchair van;

Transfers patients into and out of wheelchairs;

Use multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips;

Communicate well with others; and related duties as assigned.

Work schedule:

Varied Shifts (Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; Mon-Thurs 7:00 am - 5:30 pm; & Tues - Fri 7:00 am - 5:30 pm) may be asked to work outside these times based on mission requirements.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/27/2018.

Your background must demonstrate experience in operating a passenger van, a wheelchair van and sedans to transport patient and/or supplies; making pre-trip and after trip safety inspections (checking for gas, oil, battery, horn, lights and tire pressure); operate a vehicle safely adhering to all State, local and installation traffic laws and ordinances with a valid driver's license, and communicate with a variety of internal/external patients and staff.

EXPERIENCE:

A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:

Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

* Operation of different types of motor vehicles to include a 14-passenger vehicle.

* Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation).

* Ability to drive and operate safely (Motor Vehicles and Non-Motor Vehicles).

* Must possess a State Driver's license.

* Ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision.

* Ability to check, inspect, and maintain motor vehicles.

* Ability to communicate and provide customer service to a wide variety of patients and staff.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note

: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Drivers at this grade level exert light to heavy physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls as well as maneuver longer and heavier vehicles, especially when breaking these vehicles. Moderate to heavy physical exertion effort from the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and the occasional handling of heavier objects while loading cargo, with the assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment to frequent stooping and bending to assist patients into and out of the vehicle.

Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather in all types of traffic environment throughout a Government installation/establishment and public roads (or the equivalent), and are exposed to the dangers of serious accidents (causing cuts, bruises and broken bones). Drivers may also be exposed to dirt and fumes or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.
