Incumbent utilizes CPRS to add comments used by schedulers to properly direct the course of care. Incumbent utilizes CPRS to view and retrieve information on patients sent to the CPAP clinic utilizing sensitivity protocol including the Privacy Act, in dealing with this system. Researches CPRS, Remote Data, Vista Web Imaging for sleep study reports from VA's throughout the country, makes telephone calls to facilities if information is not available or to the patient if no information is found. Tracks consults, clinic review and scheduling of CPAP clinics. Incumbent understands oximeter readings for the purpose of reporting physiological findings as related to sleep disorders and ensures the interface of CPAP/BiPAP with oxygen and coordinates 02 needs with Home Oxygen coordinator. Incumbent performs positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting and adjusting and performs re-evaluation of patient for equipment usage and function. Ensures that on initial set-up and instruction the CPAP patient is enrolled in the CPAP/BiPAP clinic for future re-evaluation and follow-up. Incumbent communicates with patients via telephone and assists in trouble shooting CPAP equipment problems over the phone. Develops and executes processes and plans to streamline procedures for the
CPAP/BiPAP clinic. Incumbent must have complete knowledge of CPAP function, set-up and operation of different types of CPAP, BiPAP, and complex sleep units e.g. Adapt SV and Servo CPAP units. Provides instructions and technical assistance to patients via telephone, appointment, telehealth or walk- in patients. Demonstrates effective written and communication skills. Demonstrates good customer service to VA patients and family by being understanding and compassionate. Oversees and monitors contract compliance with home oxygen /CPAP contractor. Incumbent must be knowledgeable with 02 and be able to fill in for the Home 02 coordinator in his/her absence.
The incumbent, under the supervision of the Medicine Service/Sleep Medicine displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all Sleep diagnostic and treatment procedures and other related treatment and education in accordance with the guidelines and protocols established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, SLC VA Sleep Service and procedures of the Salt Lake City VA Hospital.

Basic Requirements:

There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions.
* Licensure or Certification:
Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under Titles and Certification/Registrations. For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
* English Language Proficiency:
Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience:
* Demonstrates proficiency in downloading polysomnographic data from and troubleshooting home polysomnographic devices.
* Demonstrates extensive knowledge in Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) therapy and mask fitting. This includes all PAP devices (CPAP, BiPAP, AVAPS, BiPAP ST, Auto ServoVentilator) supplemental oxygen, actigraphy, and pulse oximetry equipment.
* Proficient in scoring/reviewing sleep studies, both in-lab and home polysomngraphic studies.
* Recognize the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk.
* Demonstrates proficiency and expertise in over scoring polysomnographic studies for quality assurance procedures.
Grade Determinations:
Medical Instrument Technicians at GS-6 and above will have a functional assignment and reference should be made to the appropriate appendix for qualifications evaluation. Grade level criteria, KSAs (core competencies), and typical assignment information for all GS-4 and GS-5 levels are defined generically in this part of the qualification standard. For higher level positions where the grade level/assignment is based on supervisory and/or managerial responsibilities, criteria are also included in the general portion of this qualification standard (for individuals in multiple function assignments) and/or the specific appendices.
For non-supervisory positions at GS-6 and above and for supervisory positions in a single specialty, the grade level criteria, KSAs, and types of assignments are discussed in appendices matching the title areas listed below. Reference should be made to the appropriate appendix in evaluating the qualifications of individuals for this occupation.

Physical Requirements:
Work is primarily performed in patient care areas, in-patient and outpatient. Extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors involved. Moving equipment and supplies, lifting, bending, stooping, and possible exposure to body fluid is involved.
This position has been evaluated as a Level 1 in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) definition of occupational exposure to blood borne pathogens.
