Responsibilities

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Salem, Virginia, under Nutrition and Food Services. The primary purpose of this position is to transport food carts, server carts and condiment carts to the patient units, wards and/or cart docking station.

Major duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

Select and place food items on patient trays as they proceed down the tray assembly line according to a regular or modified menu printed on individual tray tickets, or patient selected menu.

Transport Advance Meal Deliver System (AMDS) food cart to the patient units/wards/cart docking station.

Deliver meal trays and nourishments to the patient's bed.

Pick up soiled trays and dishes from patient's room after each meal and return soiled trays and dishes to the dish room after meals.

Transport AMDS food cart back to main kitchen.

Report the patient's comments and complains to the supervisor or dietician.

Set up assigned station on the tray line with the correct supplies and food items, and break down and clean the station after the serving period.

Prepare individual and bulk nourishments and special feedings for patients.

Assembles, measures, weighs, and mixes ingredients for basic formulas and other supplemental feedings.

Take nourishment inventories, replace expired bulk items, and label and distribute individual nourishments to appropriate patients or nursing stations.

Provide assistance to cooks in the food preparation area by weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes.

Assists warehouseman and ingredient control personnel

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

Work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order) to include adherence to sanitation standards for a food-service establishment.

Technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) such as ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations and distribution of food items into standardized portion sizes.

Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc (other than blueprints) to include oral and written instructions (e.g. safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals, menus, recipes, time and duty schedules, etc.) and feedback.

Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment such as mechanical dishwashers, food carts, pot washers, tray conveyors, coffee machines, etc.

Knowledge of materials such as those required for tray assembly, setting up serving units, and diet therapy.

Dexterity and safety of the work environment such as physical efforts necessary for job completion, practices for safe handling of food, and adherence to infection control practices and procedures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Frequently lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 pounds. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. May also be required to work on ladders and use powered cleaning equipment. Incumbent is required to push AMDS food cart which weighs approximately 500 pounds, and will require 12 pounds of force to initiate movement and also 7 pounds of constant force to keep the food cart rolling.

Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over), straight pulling and pushing (1-1/2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands and legs, walking (3 hours), standing (5 hours), kneeling (1 hour), repeated bending (3 hours), climbing (1 hour), operation of Cushman, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near and far vision, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), and emotional/mental stability are required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperature and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Incumbent is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
