Responsibilities

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The position is that of Supervisory Respiratory Therapist, Respiratory Care Section. The incumbent, a Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care, provides professional, technical, and administrative supervision to personnel who work in the Respiratory Care Department, Bronchoscopy, Home CPAP, Home Oxygen and Pulmonary clinics, as well as in the PFT and Sleep Laboratories, and in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program In this capacity, is responsible for assuring that services of these functional units are rendered appropriately to a general medical and surgical medical center, including critical care units, extended care unit, and outpatient facilities including ambulatory care clinics, as determined by the services needed. Accepts and supports the guiding principles of this Medical Center while performing assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, outstanding customer service and the maintenance of an environment committed to serving the Veteran.

CLINICAL:

- Renders respiratory care and associated diagnostic services ordered by and in collaboration with the physician on all tours of duty with minimal or no direct supervision.

- Participates in the complex decision making process of respiratory care at many levels; including, but not limited to, patient observation, examination, and education, equipment preparation and usage, data collection and analysis, and evaluation for the need for the commencement , modification, or termination of these services.

- Provides supervision and technical support in Sleep Lab and in all modalities of respiratory care including mechanical ventilation management and high-tech monitoring in the MICU, SICU, and Recovery Room.

- Delivers all forms of Respiratory Care as needed, due to staffing shortages and/or significant workload increases.

- The incumbent provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional and chronological maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient. The incumbent demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the adult patient population age 18 to 75 and geriatric age 75 and over

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Registered Respiratory Therapist. Certification as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:

(1) Fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or(2) Fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.

Preferred Experience: Prior experience as a Supervisory or Lead Registered Respiratory Therapist

Grade Determinations: Candidates must possess (3) years of specialized experience as a registered respiratory therapist. Examples of Specialized Experience include but are not limited to: administration of assisted and controlled ventilation to patients with complex medical problems; demonstrated accomplishments in upgrading services to patients; the ability to perform complex respiratory procedures; participates with physicians, nurses, and/or other medical staff in respiratory patient treatment planning; plans and conducts in-service education or training for hospital staff, students, patients, and families; the ability to plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and evaluate programs involving respiratory care. Applicants must also possess supervisory experience leading a respiratory therapy unit. Examples of supervisory experience include but are not limited to: planning work schedules and sequence of operations, ensuring adequate work coverage; developing and updating guidelines and policies; formulating training and education plans for subordinates; resolving technical work problems.

NOTE: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the grade and salary at which the candidate will be placed. For internal selectees eligible for promotion, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.
