The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System (VASLCHCS) is made up of compassionate employees committed to caring for Veterans whose sacrifices know no limit. We are part of the Rocky Mountain Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 19). Our health care system consists of the George E. Wahlen Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and nine community clinics across Utah, Idaho, and Nevada. We provide health care to over 48,000 eligible Veterans across one of the largest geographical areas in VA. We are a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, holistic medicine as well as education and research in partnership with the University of Utah and other institutions of higher education. Comprehensive health care is provided through our primary care providers and tertiary care is offered in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.

Responsibilities

The physician serves as a primary care provider in the Community-based Outpatient Clinic. This position provides a full range of primary care services to an assigned panel of patients emphasizing quality, timeliness, and the advancement of the VA mission.

The scope of primary care is defined in applicable VA policies. These services will be rendered in a thoughtful and resource effective manner consistent both with VA policies and with the highest standards of medical care. Such activities include, but are not limited to, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness, specialty referrals, care coordination between service lines, and communication with patients and/or their appropriate surrogates regarding findings and management plans. In addition, the physician will also provide service to patients on other provider panels as needed to provide continuity of care when the other providers are absent. The physician is responsible to contribute to the achievements of quality of care standards, efficiency, process improvement, and patient satisfaction. The physician writes orders for diagnostic testing, prescribed medications, and consultation to specialty services utilizing computer-keyboarding techniques using the CPRS system. The physician is expected to practice in accordance with professional standards, core values and with a commitment to service excellence. Board Certification preferred.

The CBOC Physician will further support the VA mission through participation in applicable VA national, VISN, and local quality and process improvement initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to, performance measures and monitors and advanced clinical access. The physician will work with supervisory and front line staff to foster and improve the operation of the CBOC.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or

Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred experience: At least 2 years of Clinical Practice, including resident teaching.

Must have experience in Women's Health.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. The physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials. (VA Directive and Handbook 5019 Part 2)
