Summary
Functions as a general-purpose technician in Pharmacy Service, fully trained and familiar with departmental procedures and policy guidelines in the Outpatient pharmacy. Duties include the prescription filling, dispensing, procurement functions and narcotic vault assignments. Administrative services may include such areas as customer service, telephone coverage, receiving, and record keeping.

Responsibilities
The technician reports medication safety issues and quality issues through the appropriate channels and strives to prevent defects in the medication use system.
Using Standard Operating Procedures, reads and interprets the prescription label to ensure accuracy, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data in the computer system.Assures that medication orders are separated by patient throughout the entire process.
Serves as a back-up for controlled substance dispensing.Fills controlled substance prescriptions, completes record keeping and maintains accuracy of inventory reports. Reports any unusual occurrences or confirmed prescription or filling discrepancy to a supervisor.
Performs necessary daily maintenance, loading, and documentation functions for automated dispensing equipment (i.e. Script-Pro). Is able to problem solve robotic dispensing issues and trouble shoot basic software or hardware issues. Refills automated dispensing equipment according to policy and assures that the product identification matches the drug file entry precisely.
Provides patient education via telephone on the medication refill process, the use of the automated telephone system, the use of the internet refill system and general information on the outpatient pharmacy such as hours of operation and types of pharmacy services available on site.
Communicates to the assigned pharmacist all interactions dealing with medication problems. Interacts face-to-face and by telephone, electronic mail, or via other media with patients, caregivers, and other professionals, documenting patient care activities and patient information in CPRS.
Delivers medications, IV solutions, and ward stock items to their proper locations in a timely manner.
Work Schedule:
10 Hour Shifts, Weekday schedule will include rotation of 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, and 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM. or hours of operation. Weekend schedule will include Saturday and Sunday coverage from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM or hours of operation.

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship:

* Education or Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
* Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
* Loss of Credential:
An employee who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
Grade Determinations
: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: GS-6.
(a) Experience.
One year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
(b) Certification.
PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
(d) Assignments:
Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example, assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Physical Requirements:
Must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the Lead Pharmacy Technician Position. The work also requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing for prolonged periods of time, lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 50 lb., and bending/stooping.
