Salem VA Medical Center is recruiting for one (1) full-time Surgeon (General) to join its experienced staff of physicians and health professionals in the Department of Surgery at the Medical Center. The selected candidate will provide comprehensive surgical services as well as follow-up care of existing conditions and management of emergency conditions within the general surgery practice at the Medical Center. In addition to our continuing commitment to

quality Veteran care, Salem VA Medical Center is also a teaching hospital and

research center, maintaining both an active R&D program encompassing multiple

specialty practices as well as three active medical school affiliations with

the University of Virginia School of Medicine, the Edward Via Virginia College

of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

of Salem, Virginia is located adjacent to Roanoke, both of which are nestled in

the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia. The Salem & Roanoke

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday, 7:45am – 4:30pm, with shared


The successful candidate will function as a member of the general

surgery staff within the Department of Surgery, servicing Veterans primarily in

the Surgery Clinic and Operating Room with occasional inpatient and ER services

as necessary. As a general surgeon, the successful candidate will be expected

to provide comprehensive surgical care services as well as follow-up care of

existing conditions and management of emergency conditions within the general

surgery practice at the medical center. The selected individual will be

responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:


pre-operative and post-operative surgical services, including hospital rounds,

for surgical patients;


general surgery in the operating room, averaging one to five (1-5) cases per

day based on complexity;


weekly outpatient and inpatient clinics, averaging twenty to twenty-five

(20-25) patients per day;


non-operative hospital rounds for surgical patients;


services through appropriate notes and medical documentation;


morbidity and mortality information and documentation;


call coverage with other VAMC general surgeons;


residents and students in selecting, developing and preparing abstracts for

presentation; and


administrative duties intended to promote the proper functioning of the

Surgical Care Service Line.

· Demonstrated experience in Vascular Surgery is preferred.




Candidate must be a citizen of the United States. Noncitizens

accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3g.


Degree of

doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education

in medicine or osteopathic medicine.


Applicant must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice

medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United

States, or in the District of Columbia.


Candidate must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent,

approved by the Secretary of VA for the year in which it was completed.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to

direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English

as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), 7407(d).
