Summary

The Registered Nurse MDRO Prevention Coordinator is a highly skilled professional who provides leadership and manages all aspects of the MDRO Prevention Initiative, serving as the focal point of the Initiative directed at the identification, surveillance, reporting of data to key stakeholders, prevention, and control of MDRO infections in patients and staff in the medical center and related community facilities in accordance with VHA Directive 2010-006 and VHA MDRO Prevention Initiative memoranda and guidelines, nationally recognized infection control and prevention standards and guidelines, and established performance measures.

Work Schedule: Days- Monday-Friday- 8:00 am-4:30 pm. Compressed tour may be possible.

Responsibilities

The MDRO I functions as a consultant, educator, role model, researcher, and change agent and collaborates daily within all facets of healthcare in the medical center and the community performing at a level that positively affects several units, services, service lines and/or the entire medical center with documented outcomes. Major duties include but not limited to:

1. Directly responsible and accountable to the Medical Center's Chief of Infectious Diseases.

2. Serves as an expert consultant in MDRO infection prevention and control for staff, students, patients, families, and visitors based on nationally established infection control guidelines and standards.

3. Must have knowledge in areas of patient care practices, microbiology, asepsis, environmental infection prevention and control, disinfection/sterilization, adult education, infectious diseases, communication, program administration, and epidemiology.

4. Responsible for collecting and analyzing data on MRSA swab completion rates, prevalence rates, infection rates, transmission rates, and colonization rates of MRSA and other MDROs and reporting that data to key stakeholders including the VHA National Data Base, IPEC and the PVAHCS Infection Prevention and Control Committee.

5. Collects data relevant to quality improvement efforts in infection prevention and uses the data effectively to evaluate outcomes.

6. Participates in the development, review, and revision of Infection Control Guidelines, policies, and procedures consistent with national standards for infection prevention.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: Bachelor's or Master's degree in nursing.

CIC Certification

Infection Prevention experience.

Familiarization with MDRO program .

Strong communication skills.

Able to work a part of a multidisciplinary team.

Commitment to education.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Note- If a current VA RN is selected, the RN will reassign at their current grade and step.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Near vision correctable at 13 to 16; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/25 or better. Ability to distinguish shades of color is not required but would be beneficial. Incumbent will sit, type, walk and talk with staff, manage databases. S/He should be able to carry 20 lbs for long distances in extreme heat on an intermittent basis. The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
