As a 157 bed medical, surgical, and psychiatric facility, the Kansas City VA provides comprehensive health care through primary care and tertiary care in subspecialty medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation. Duties The Kansas City VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time board certified Addictions Psychiatrist. The incumbent will carry an appropriate clinical workload, take part in continuing medical education (as defined by licensure), and will be involved with quality assurance and performance improvement activities. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: - Clinical: Provide psychiatric patient care to our Substance Abuse Residential Treatment Program (SARRTP) veteran patients. This would include: provide full-range of clinically indicated treatment and rehabilitation services for patients with substance abuse disorders, including ambulatory withdrawal management and addiction recovery services to veterans with substance use and co-occurring disorders; conduct assessments for psychiatric, substance use, social and any associated medical problems in the residential and outpatient clinical setting; perform initial psychiatric evaluation with follow-ups determined by their clinical needs for new patients; assess patients for suicidal, homicidal or violent behavior and offer appropriate treatment modalities and for associated medical, surgical or other problems and will make prompt referral to appropriate services; use appropriate treatment modalities including psychotropic medications, individual therapy, and group therapy with evidence-based addiction-focused pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions; evaluate patients for the appropriateness of admission to SARRTP and\/or substance abuse outpatient services and may admit the veteran to acute Inpatient Psychiatry if immediate stabilization is needed; provide ongoing follow up for appropriate patients and will assist in monitoring the patients enrolled in the program and the outcome of various treatments provided by the program; provide education (individual, family, and group) on substance use disorders, mental\/emotional problems, preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs; maintain phone contact with patients, families, and community agencies as needed; serve as a consultant to others needing guidance and direction in the management of complex, difficult patient care cases, especially involving substance use disorders in residential and other settings. - Teaching: Provide guidance to rotating Residents, Fellows, and Medical Students on rotation from University of Kansas, School of Medicine. Skills needed would be to lead, give direction, provide knowledge, skills and abilities in the Psychiatry field and train other professional staff in the psychiatry section. - Administrative: Completes encounters in a timely manner. Attends hospitals assigned committees, section meetings, and other administrative functions. Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, semiannual and annual reports concerning this department, maintaining accurate data on all procedures. Prepares and updates the policy and procedure manual for the department that complies with JCAHO guidelines.
