Summary

This position is located in the General Medical Research Service, Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, Nashville Campus.

The Laborer will perform routine cleaning and sanitizing of laboratory animal cages and housing within the Research Service of Tennessee Valley Health Care System, Nashville TN. Duties include:

Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., but may vary depending on the needs of the service and research project being conducted.

Responsibilities

Assembling necessary supplies and equipment needed to complete duties.

Cleaning and maintaining all washroom equipment following established schedule.

Sweeping and mopping all areas thoroughly.

Emptying all trash receptacles and disposes of trash properly.

Disposing of laboratory waste in accordance with established protocols.

Performing additional cleaning as required.

Making sure water is potable.

Cleaning and sterilizing cages and equipment using steam and chemicals.

Following departmental SOP for the species regarding frequency of cage changing and sanitation through use of the cage washer.

Following departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for cage sterilization.

Sanitizing animal cages and related equipment.

Performing errands in support of departmental activities.

Pick up and/or deliver items as necessary.

Carrying out errands according to Supervisor's instructions.

Completing errands promptly.

Properly disposing of terminated animals and expended supplies.

Communicating information accurately, clearly, and concisely to ensure understanding.

Observing carefully in order to respond appropriately, answer questions, or obtain needed information.

Cooperating and communicating with Medical Center staff, in a courteous and professional manner.

Maintaining confidentiality of research study information.

Referring to laboratory records and requesting assistance from Techs and/or Supervisor when necessary.

Demonstrating good judgment by following instructions carefully.

Reporting physical plant problems (i.e., incorrect water temperatures, tunnel washer malfunctions, autoclave malfunction, caging problems, etc.) to immediate supervisor.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: This position has physical requirements and requires a physical prior to appointment. The incumbent will perform work that requires light to moderate physical effort. Tasks typically involve frequent lifting and carrying light- to medium-weight objects of 5 to 14 kilograms (10 to 30 pounds), occasionally lifting and carrying medium to heavy objects, and continually walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and standing.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent usually works indoors in a laboratory center environment in areas which normally have adequate heat, light and ventilation. Work involves frequent exposure to hazardous materials including infectious waste and soiled materials. Special safety precautions and protective gear are required when handling these materials.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
