These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for New River Gorge National River is Jan - May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: Feb - Mar 2018
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Performs a variety of work that involves the operation of gasoline and diesel powered heavy equipment at the journeyman level. Types of equipment/machinery used, but not limited to, includes: graders, loaders, backhoes, excavators, rollers, bulldozers, dump trucks, skid steers, fork lifts, all terrain load handlers, articulating boom mowers, snow plows and blowers. Incumbent safely loads and unloads equipment onto flatbed and lowboy type trailers, and transports equipment to and from work sites.
Equipment is operated to maintain park roads and shoulders, pull offs, parking areas, trails, camp grounds, boat launches, perform vegetation and snow removal, pull ditch lines, and in support of other park divisions to include rehab of old roads and industrial sites. The incumbent will operate equipment in all weather conditions, in confined areas close to buildings, on narrow gravel and paved roads adjacent to steep drop offs with minimal guard rails, and over uneven terrain.
Duties also include preventive maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment in compliance with manufacturer's specifications, completing simple repairs, making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments operated, to include replacing chains, belts, cables, and lubricating and adjusting attachments to maintain optimal operating conditions.
New River Gorge National River is located in West Virginia, approximately 60 miles south of Charleston. Headquarters is located in Glen Jean, West Virginia. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns. Several communities are within commuting distance to the park such as Beckley, Fayetteville, and Oak Hill. Complete shopping and medical services are available in the surrounding area but Charleston, WV has larger shopping centers, a university, and numerous medical specialists.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to the hazardous work (ie. work with chainsaws, driving a motor vehicle, etc.)

Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and Jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools.
Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside with the majority of work being performed outside. When working outside, worker is frequently exposed to inclement weather. Incumbent works in rain, mud, snow, and in hot/cold temperatures. The operator is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents and cold and dampness. Worker is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while servicing and operating equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.
