Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs.

Major duties include, but are not limited, to the following:

Understanding and application of ASEPTIC PRACTICE Surgical attire

Hand hygiene

Patient skin antisepsis

Sterile technique

Ability to set up and maintain a sterile field

Understanding and application of surgical procedures Anatomy and Physiology

Knowledge of Surgical Instruments/Surgical Supplies

Understanding and proper use of OR Equipment and Product Safety including but not limited to electro cautery, lasers, tourniquets, handling tissue, specialty surgical tables and accessories

Understanding and application for a Safe Environment of Care in the Perioperative Setting Fire Risk assessment

Time Out protocol

Positioning techniques to prevent injuries with maximum exposure

Latex allergies

Use of chemicals

Handling of medical waste

Medication safety

Prevention of retained surgical items

Sharps safety

Handling of surgical specimens

Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Prevention of Intraoperative Hypothermia

Accurate documentation of the surgical procedure

Knowledge of proper handling Reusable Medical Devices

Work as a collaborative team member with Anesthesia, Surgeons, Surgical Technologist, and RN colleagues

Ability to make accurate patient assessments

Work Schedule: Monday -Friday 7:30 A.M. - 4:00 P.M., with rotation to late shift 1:00 P.M. - 9:30 P.M. Option to change to a 10-hour shift from 7:30 A.M. - 6:00 P.M. with rotation to late shift 11:00 A.M. - 9:30 P.M. after orientation. On call rotation required.

Basic Requirements:

Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)

Graduation from School of Nursing. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Registration. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of two years recent OR experience as an RN with in the last three (3) years

Ability to scrub and circulate

Possess physical ability to stand for long periods of time, frequent moving and lifting of patients and equipment

BLS Certification by the AHA at the start of employment at the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System

Ability to provide on-call coverage (nights and weekends with a 30-minute arrival response)

Bachelors in Nursing preferred

CNOR preferred

Documented excellent interpersonal relationship skills with demonstrated ability to work with multidisciplinary groups effectively

Clinical competency documented in prior nursing assignments

Demonstrated exceptional ability to make critical decisions in stressful environments

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping. sitting. bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium. dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
