Summary

The Assistant Chief, Mental Health Service reports organizationally to the Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Health Service and is responsible for the oversight and performance of all Mental Health Service operations at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, which includes a medical center, domiciliary, and 6 outpatient clinics over a 3 state area. Services offered include inpatient acute care psychiatry services on a 15-bed ward, mental health intensive case management program, substance use disorder programs, post-traumatic stress disorder programs, general mental health outpatient programs, primary care integrated health programs, psychoneurological testing, suicide prevention programs, compensated work therapy programs, military sexual trauma programs, and evidence based therapy programs. The qualified MD/DO candidate should be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and experience in management is strongly preferred. Position assists the Associate Chief of Staff, Mental Health Service in ensuring quality patient care through meeting or surpassing the performance measures and the VACO designated benchmark. Position is also includes clinical practice and oversight responsibility for medical residents.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Responsibilities

The person is assigned to Mental Health Service and is a member of a multi-disciplinary team that focuses on the treatment of Veterans who suffer from the spectrum of mental disorders. The Assistant Chief/Psychiatrist Supervisor is responsible for a group of providers in Mental Health programs at the VHSO. Clinically, incumbent will also provide a broad range of direct clinical services in support of Veterans who are patients of the Mental Health Service. Duties may be split between inpatient and outpatient. In the outpatient setting, the psychiatrist will function as a member of a multidisciplinary team. The inpatient unit is an open general psychiatry unit and the provider may have responsibility for a 15 bed inpatient unit at a time with the support of two physician assistants and a multidisciplinary team. Ability to do ECT and prescribe Buprenorphine is preferred. On-call is shared with 7 other psychiatrists and is taken from home with some weekend duty in the hospital. Basic computer literacy and average typing speed is necessary as we use a paperless patient record. Board eligible in psychiatry/board certified preferred.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.
