Hero's Way Hospice is a 10-bed unit in the CLC providing pain control, symptom management, end of life care and bereavement support to the residents and family of the imminently dying. The program is designed to provide optimal comfort care to Veteran and meets the mission, vision and values of the VA Health Care System and nursing division. The acuity ranges from comfort care to advanced modalities when needed to control pain. The length of stay for veterans in the unit may range from a few hours to 30 days or occasionally longer. Veterans are accepted for Hospice care from the Emergency Department, ICU, medical/surgical wards, home, and community facilities.
The CLC Hospice Unit has an interdisciplinary team that includes staffing representing Nursing, Chaplain, Social Work, Pharmacy, Dietary, Psychology, Recreational Therapy, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. The interdisciplinary team meets to plan care and modify treatment according to needs of Veteran and family. End of life care Veterans may require IV push medication, PCA pumps, epidural analgesia, BiPap, CPap, and management of delirium. The overall responsibility of the Hospice Nurse Manager is to direct, manage and supervise the nursing care of Hospice residents. The aim of the role is promoting quality care that is fiscally responsible, within an atmosphere that is conducive to high employee morale and engagement, and conducting continuous improvement strategies.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8 hour day tour 7:30AM - 4:00 PM; schedule may vary to assure appropriate unit coverage for all tours, some off tour shifts and weekends may be required.

Facilitating response/action to patient inquiries regarding care and treatment
Developing, coordinating and implementing programs and liaisons that promote resident/family comfort, pain relief and death with dignity
Providing/coordinating education on End of Life Care throughout the Medical Center
Active member of the Palliative Care Consult Team
Member of the Medical Center Palliative Care Cultural Transformation Leadership Team
Other administrative duties as assigned by the Medical Director of Hospice/Palliative Care and the ACNS for CLC.
The successful Nurse Manager accomplishes this role through sound leadership, personal involvement, and effective relationship management.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
BSN with Master's in Nursing or Health Related Field
Certification in Geriatric Nursing.
Experience in Palliative Care and/or Hospice Setting.
Demonstrated leadership skills, good communication and ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.
Successfully undertaken difficult or complex clinical, administrative, research and/or educational assignments which have require and unusual degree of leadership and competence.

Physical Requirements: The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. Staff may be required to don protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. RN is responsible for the reprocessing of reusable medical equipment, according to the medical center policies. They are required to used available safe patient handling lifting devices in all clinical areas. They may also be exposed to Veterans who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
