Summary The primary base location for this position will be located at the South Bexar Outpatient Clinic, San Antonio, Texas. South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) is comprised of seven primary care outpatient facilities: North Central, Shavano Park, Balcones Heights, South Bexar, Audie Murphy, Frank Tejeda, Kerrville, and Victoria. STVHCS serves one of the largest primary service areas in the nation and is part of the VA Heart of Texas Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 17). Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm or 8:00am to 4:30pm May be required to work extended hours to cover weekends\/extended hour clinics. Will cover inpatient rounding on a rotating basis. Duties Obtaining comprehensive mental health histories and performing physical examinations Providing and coordinating mental health care for assigned patients, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, and providing follow up care. Evaluating outpatients to determine the need for further health care. Ordering diagnostic studies and other special tests, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computerized Tomography (CT) scans, etc. Carrying out health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education activities. Ordering or obtaining laboratory specimens. Ordering ancillary services, such as, pharmacy, social services, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies, prosthetic services, etc. Ordering VA specialty service consults and initiating requests for non-VA medical care and consults in accordance with VHA and local facility policy and procedures Ordering patient care supplies Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs Respond to consults consistent with the practice specialty within the NP Scope of Practice Psychotropic medication management including administering of injections Provide supportive therapy with the concurrent use of medications Manage psychiatric complications and screen, diagnose, and refer patients for dual diagnoses Provide consultation to inpatient\/outpatient medical and surgical teams for patients with complicated med\/surg issues that may cause short or long term psychiatric\/psychological issues Screen, diagnose and manage patients for mild\/moderate addiction, intoxication, and withdrawal. Provide brief intervention, addiction counseling, and medication management for patients with substance related disorders Provide medication management for addiction Must maintain prescriptive authority for controlled and non-controlled substances This list of duties is not all inclusive.
