This position has promotion potential to GS-12.

Promotion Potential: There is no obligation to provide future promotions to you if you are selected. Future promotions are dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and supervisory approval.

Responsibilities

For GS-9: Reviews primary and secondary cases for daily roll payments and periodic roll payments for continuing eligibility. Determines documentation needed to perfect a claim in accordance with current legislation, regulation, policy and procedure. Makes decisions of eligibility and entitlement for continuation of pay, compensation for wage loss, medical benefits. Reviews cases for possible overpayment, make recommendations and some development for initial adjudication. Responds to written and telephonic inquiries from program participants, congressional personnel, National Office staff, and other authorized interested parties.

For GS-7: duties are similar to GS-9 but performed with closer supervision. At the GS-7 and GS-9 level the incumbent receives on-the-job training in the duties performed as a Claims Examiner.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience in, or directly related to, the line of work of the position to be filled, and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of that position.

For GS-07: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service as described below.

Some examples of creditable, specialized experience include: the development of facts and evidence to support a claim; conducts basic research through various sources to obtain desired claim information, ensuring the completeness and organization of a case/ claim file or prepares/produces semi-technical written work products (letters, memoranda, reports, etc.) in an accurate and sufficiently detailed manner.

For GS-09: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service as described below.

Some examples of creditable, specialized experience include: development, analysis, and adjudication of benefits claims, conducting investigations, examining, or authorizing medical claims for processing in a federal or state agency, insurance company, hospital, or other health care-related environment. Experience in providing written and oral guidance and technical information about benefits and services to the claimant/ customer.

GS-07: One full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement*. *Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) applies to persons who have completed (or expect to complete within 9 months) all the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. SAA is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

1) Class standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, based on completed courses. 2) Grade-point average (GPA) - Applicants must have a grade point average of: A. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript as computed based on 4 years of education or based on courses completed during the final 2 years of curriculum; or B. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. 3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

For GS-09: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
