The Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) improves the health of our veterans by providing a continuum of care through an integrated health care delivery system. We are a tertiary care facility classified as a level 1b facility affiliated with the University of Louisville, as such integrates teaching, research, and advanced patient care, making it an attractive academic medical center. The facility offers a full spectrum of comprehensive health care services, using state-of-the-art technology and innovative programs, as well as education and research benefits to Veterans residing in 40 counties in central and western Kentucky and in southern Indiana.

VA offers attractive salary, excellent government benefits, and assumes liability for tort claims associated with employees' official VA duties; individual malpractice insurance is not required for this purpose.

Responsibilities

Position is part of the multidisciplinary Pain Management Program. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive medical and pain management care to Veterans seen at the Robley Rex VAMC in Louisville, KY. Individual procedures and duties performed will be consistent with selected provider's granted privileges and based upon individual training, qualifications, and experience. In addition to the performance of procedures consistent with privileges granted, the selected individual will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:

- Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures consistent with the patient's care plan;

- Provides care within the context of a multidisciplinary approach and documents services through appropriate notes;

- Provides clinical oversight to Physician Assistants, Fellows, and Residents and participates in the education program;

- Participates in interdisciplinary team activities and provides cross coverage to other programs;

- Participates actively in delivering in-service training for medical center staff, PM&R Fellows, medical residents, and medical students; and supports an environment that promotes academic excellence and encourages continual learning; and

- Develops and maintains strong relationships with other practice areas to ensure adequate and appropriate delivery of pain management services to Veterans.

Provides interventional pain management procedures on both inpatient and outpatient basis including: cervical, thoracic or lumbar epidural steroid injections; cervical or lumbar facet/nerve block/median branch blocks; sacroiliac joint injections; pulsed radio frequency; lumbar or thoracic paravertebral sympathetic blocks; trigger point injections and piriformis injections; stellate ganglion blocks; percutaneous lysis or adhesions; occipital nerve blocks; Botox injections; trigeminal nerve blocks; illioinguinal or genitofemoral nerve blocks; and spinal cord stimulator implantation, follow-up and maintenance.

Physical Requirements: In accordance with 29 Code of Federal Regulations 1614.203, the individual selected must be physically and mentally able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform the essential functions of this position without endangering the health and safety of self and others. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

- Experience operating within a pain management clinic

- Successful completion of a Pain Medicine fellowship

- Experience as an interventional pain management specialist

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Education

Educational requirements - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required.

First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are: Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, OR

Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
