This position is located within the Maintenance and Operations Section, Engineering Department at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS), West Los Angeles, CA.

Responsibilities
You will maintain a constant state of readiness of a wide variety of mobile and stationary equipment typically powered by large diesel engines, (up to 16 cylinder) powering large hydraulic operated equipment such as Armored personnel carriers, earth movers, aerial man lifts, multi-ton fork lifts, large commercial lawn care equipment and MegaWatt scale standby and emergency generators and the related systems required to support this equipment. The primary duties of the Powered Support System Mechanic is to operate, maintain and repair the 22 Emergency Generator power plants located throughout the VA-WLA facility. The emergency generators are an integral part of the Hospitals Life Safety System and are required to be maintained in a constant state of readiness for automatic starting in the event of an electric utility failure.
Repair, modification and maintenance and periodic testing of all emergency generators.
Troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, design and modify, racks, injectors, and valves.
Checks air boxes for excessive wear to pistons, changes out power packs, checks rod bearings, feeds pipes, sets racks, checks torque or cylinder heads.
Maintains turbo air cleaners, checks and changes oil, oil filters, fuel filters and repairs, modifies and maintain all associated component systems and controls.
Performs repairs to Heavy Duty Lawn Equipment, Electric Carts, Fork lifts, man lifts, street sweeper, Backhoe, and other mechanical repairs.
Documents trending test results from equipment runs, oil sample analysis, vibration and acoustic testing of all systems associated with the operation of the life safety Emergency Power Systems.
Work Schedule:
Typically, Full Time, Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Exception: Monthly emergency generators testing is every first Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and second Tuesday of each month when the work schedule is 5:00 am to 3:30 pm requiring two hours of compensated overtime for each generator testing day.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS:
You must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, crawling, occasionally working in cramped and awkward positions and working off ladders and scaffolding. You are also exposed to the possibility of burns, cuts, bruises and electric shocks.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed outdoors, in bright daylight and potentially in the rain, work is sometimes required after hours to respond to emergency call outs, inside generator rooms while generators are running, lighting is typically ok, but will also work using a flashlight in less lit areas. You are subject to high temperatures, dust, grease, diesel fuel and gasoline smell and possible contact with these and other chemicals. The environment can be very noisy, and slip trip and fall hazards exist.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:
Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
