LOCATION: These positions are located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine, Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation, Division of Scientific Support, Rockville Maryland.

APPOINTMENT DURATION/EXPECTATION: Interns will be appointed to a temporary appointment not-to-exceed September 30, 2018 and will not be extended. Appointment is based on continued need/funds for the position and the student's continued compliance in the Pathways Internship Program and will not be non-competitively converted to a term (not-to-exceed one to four years) or permanent appointment in the competitive service.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine, Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation, Division of Scientific Support is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mathematical Statistician. The Division of Scientific Support provides expertise, leadership, and coordination to all CVM offices regarding environmental safety and biostatistical evaluations for reviews and research. Through our independent and collaborative reviews and evaluations, we support the Center's scientific and regulatory goals.
As a Student Trainee (Mathematical Statistician), you will perform scientific work of an introductory nature to assist staff members with the evaluation of study protocols and review of results from studies investigating the effectiveness and safety of therapeutic and production drugs. The teams provide statistical consultation for effectiveness and safety studies, research projects, and other related work. You will use statistical and mathematical methods to draw inferences from data submitted by animal drug applicants and assist the Center scientists in study design, data analysis, and data interpretation. Overall duties and responsibilities assigned will allow you to gain a practical work experience that augments learning obtained in your mathematical degree program.

In order to qualify for the Pathways Internship Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria and the qualification requirements corresponding to the grade level at which they wish to be considered by the closing date of the announcement:
PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be currently enrolled in high school or accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student in an accredited vocational or technical institution, 2- or 4- year college/university or graduate/professional school; taking a minimum half-time load of courses; possessing and maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 on a scale of 4.0; and pursuing any of the following academic degrees: High School Diploma or equivalent
Vocational/Technical Certificate (two-year program)
Baccalaureate Degree Graduate Degree (Master's program)
Professional Degree (Doctoral program)

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHEDULE D, PATHWAYS INTERNSHIP POSITION:
GS-07: Completion of one full academic year of graduate level education (18 semester/27 quarter units); or eligibility under Superior Academic Achievement provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.
GS-09: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
GS-11: For research positions, completion of all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
For non-research positions, completion of all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree.
Note: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school you attended has determined to represent one year of study.
