The Department of Veterans Affairs - Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is located in Temple, Texas, which is centrally located between Austin and Dallas. It is one of the VA's largest integrated health care systems with facilities in Austin, Brownwood, Cedar Park, Palestine, Bryan-College Station and Waco. Texas has no State Income Tax.

Responsibilities

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant position is located at the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System, La Grange, TX. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model within the Medical Center. S/he is responsible for providing assistance to Veterans to ensure a smooth process in the management of his/her outpatient appointments and/or Non VA medical care. The AMSA interacts effectively with peers, patients, families and members of the healthcare team in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner promoting positive work relationships. The position requires an advanced knowledge of medical terminology, computerized data entry and information processing systems, setting and managing priorities and deadlines, and participating and providing input in solving operational or procedural issues in team huddles/team meetings.

Other duties include, but are not limited to:

·Interpreting, verifying, and scheduling appointments.

·Ensures that clinic utilization is optimized and effectively supports the needs of the clinic and the Veterans.

·Verifying and updating patient demographic and insurance information.

·Receiving and directing telephone calls.

·Data entry into and monitoring of the Electronic Wait List (EWL), Recall Reminders and Return to Clinic orders.

·Preparing, printing and distributing various reports, correspondence.

·Faxing documents, mail distribution, retrieving and responding to messages/announcement.

·Performing basic eligibility requirements.

·Completing all mandatory training, competencies related to their position and other administrative duties as assigned.

·Participate in team huddles/team meetings to manage and plan patient care, set priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow of work to meet team and patient needs.

Ambulatory Care - CBOC: The AMSA will work in an interdisciplinary coordinated care deliver model and perform the administrative aspects of patient care to include: the receipt, intake, appointment scheduling, and indexing of health and administrative information. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary and walking. The work requires the ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously in dealing with a wide variety of clients on a daily basis. Tasks will require prolonged use of computers. There are lengthy periods of sitting, interrupted by intervals of walking and climbing stairs about the medical center to make the many personal contacts required of this position.

Basic Requirements: Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen

Experience/Education: Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. OR Education: One year above high school OR Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for an entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

Pre-employment Physical: Must pass a pre-placement/employment physical examination.

Grade Determinations:

Advanced Medical Support Assistant, GS-0679-06: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5). Qualifying experience includes experiences gained in working in an administrative health care setting, to include, but may not be limited to: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre-authorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.).

Candidates must also demonstrate the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) below:

· Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.

· Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.

· Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.

· Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.

· Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.

· Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by Clinicians.

There is no education substitution for the GS-06 grade level.
