This vacancy is for a Visual Information Specialist (Graphic Artist) position in the Field Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line – Suitland Station.

This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Visual Information Specialist (Graphic Artist), GG-1084-12, positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience.

This is a Term Appointment, initial appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 2 years. This appointment may be extended 2 additional years at management’s discretion.

A trial period may be required.

This position is ELIGIBLE for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

This is a BARGAINING unit position.

Responsibilities

The individual selected for this position will:

Ability to design and develop a wide variety of creative visual products and materials.

Ability to utilize various computer graphics software and equipment, design layout, picture or clip art usage, and placement of typographical text through use of font styles, types and colors.

Ability to effectively create and develop types of graphics items that will inform, promote awareness and motivate cooperation from a variety of audiences in support of a program.

Ability to maintain graphic materials and products for distribution to a variety of agency related events and to the general public or special interest populations as needed to support an outreach plan (i.e., the Community Partnership and Engagement Program).

Specialized Experience:

For the GG-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means. Examples of such work include: Experience in using and applying related creative design illustration, layouts and formats, experience using graphic and layout software packages and equipment such as Photoshop, GIF, JPEG and similar file formats, experience creating layouts, design and other graphic and visual materials such as photographs, illustrations, and graphic clip art, experience in maintaining a supply of graphic materials and products for distribution on a local or national level for internal and external customers (i.e., customer portal, online fulfillment center, website pages containing visual products, etc.) experience in developing weekly, monthly, or annual newsletters, poster or flyers, to inform and distribute information internally or externally; includes performing visual inspection for quality assurance.

Education cannot be substituted at this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Skilled in creating a physical and/or digital content library using SharePoint or other authorized software to maintain a catalog and/or retrieval system for ordering graphic materials; includes archiving materials during post-closeout.
