We are seeking a team member for our Tazewell/Bland County Bridge Maintenance Section to operate light to medium duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction work task; perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools; perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist with construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel, and concrete bridge elements and other structures; perform combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry, welding, concrete finishing, remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures; apply in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural activities; demonstrate safety at all times, including use of protective equipment, equipment safety, and work zone regulations in accordance with VDOT safety rules and other rules and regulations; respond to structure and bridge emergencies and perform emergency operations. Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices; skill in operation of light and medium-duty equipment; ability to perform heavy manual labor, perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and tools; skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing; ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts; ability to communicate both orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions; valid Commercial Drivers License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter; High School Graduate or equivalent combination or education, training, and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform he job.
Experience in bridge maintenance and/or construction; experience in carpentry for building concrete forms and false works and concrete placement; experience fabricating or welding steel components; valid Commercial Drivers License; valid Certified Crane Operator Certification.
Safety shoes are required; ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water, and under adverse conditions. This position is designated as essential for emergencies and may be required to work beyond the normal workday, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Pre-employment physical with drug screen will be required. Fingerprint-based background check will be conducted. References, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted.
