. This position is located in the Office of Research Facilities (ORF), Division of Facilities Operations and Maintenance (DFOM), Maryland Facilities Management Branch (MFMB), Clinical Center Facilities Branch (CCFB) and Research Triangle Park Facilities Management Branch (RTP)
This vacancy is focusing on Heavy HVAC and Heavy Refrigeration duties.
This is a bargaining unit position represented by a union.
NIH has facilities in Bethesda, Poolesville, Ft. Detrick and Baltimore, upon management's discretion you may be placed at one of these locations if the need arises.

Working as a Maintenance Mechanic with the Office of Research Facilities (ORF), Division of Facilities Operations and Maintenance (DFOM), Maryland Facilities Management Branch (MFMB) or Clinical Center Facilities Branch (CCFB), or Research Triangle Park Facilities Management Branch (RTP) you will:
Troubleshoot HVAC/R systems with complex problems and extensive repairs requiring judgment to locate malfunctions.
Install, repair, and maintain large commercial and industrial ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning (AC), and cooling systems with complex problems and extensive repairs.
Perform preventive maintenance on HVAC/R systems and equipment.
Respond to service calls and preventive maintenance inspections orally or in writing through computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) regarding malfunctioning/inoperable equipment, kitchen and domestic equipment (e.g., dishwashers, electric rangers, dryers); shop and laboratory equipment (e.g., vacuum pumps, air compressors, piping systems); and plumbing, utility, supply and disposal system (e.g., steam, chilled water, domestic water, sanitary water natural gas, etc.)
HEAVY REFRIGERATION DUTIES:
Make repairs to a variety of HVAC equipment, both industrial and residential.
Replaces fixtures such as thermostats, heating elements, overload switches, heater strips and magnetic coils.
Performs air balancing adjustment, calibration and checks operations to ensure proper operation of systems.

You must be able to lift and move heavy items weighing up to 100 lbs.
You must be able to stand for prolonged periods on concrete floors and walk over rough and uneven terrain.
The selectee must be able to bend, stoop, walk, stand, and climb, and work in cramped positions.
You may work in hazardous environments or handle hazardous substances.
The selectee must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions.
This position requires weekend hours, night shifts, regular or rotational shifts, holiday hours.

The selectee must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle license.
This position is designated as an emergency essential position and the selected candidate will be considered an emergency essential employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances, e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.

A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement to this position.
