This position is in the Nutrition and Food Service (NFS) department with the KCVA Medical Center, Kansas City, MO.
The Food Service Worker duties include, but are not limited to work in Food Service areas, Dietary Office, and Select Menu:
: Set up assigned station on the tray line with correct supplies and food items, and break down and clean the serving station after the serving period. Select and place food/non-food items on patient trays during tray assembly, identify obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diet and the food items designed by the menu. Replenish food items on the trayline during meal service.
Assemble and portion all regular and modified diet cold food items according to standardized procedures/menu. Assist the cooks in food prep area i.e., cleaning, cutting, chopping, weighing, measuring and assembling ingredients. Set up, operates, break down and clean all electrical equipment.
Follow written directions for setting up individual and bulk nourishments, i.e. tube feedings, juice, shake-ups, milk, sandwiches, etc. Prepare gelatin, custard (using mixes), gelatin salads, sandwich spreads, special request items, i.e. salads, cold plates, sandwich cycle items and bag lunches.
Transport food trucks to and from patient wards, delivering nourishments to patients and ward refrigerators. Deliver and pick up patient trays according to established procedures. Report patient's comments and complaints to food service supervisor.
Clean assigned work areas and equipment, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors, scraping and washing dishes/pots and pans, cleaning equipment used in food production and service, walk-in refrigerators, walls/windows and sanitizing containers and work areas. Perform heavy cleaning i.e. trayline equipment and other cleaning tasks to maintain a high standard of sanitation. Dispose of waste/trash from the main kitchen.
Answer phones and document information on phone logs. Work on Diet Activity Report, process diet-related changes, i.e. new admissions/diet changes, discharges, transfers, etc. Prepare diet ticket labels and ward diet rosters. Transfer diet orders, food allergies, food preferences, isolation precautions and standing orders to appropriate menu sheets. Process requests for early & late trays and ensure requests are responded to in a timely manner.
: Assist with the select menu program, visiting patients at bedside and review/tally meal selection menus.

Background must demonstrate knowledge of and experience in all sanitation and safety rules common to food service activities and adhere to established department and station safety, sanitation, and infection control policies and procedures.
Must know a variety of food handling techniques and must be able to work safely while performing such tasks as moving carts without hitting things, stacking dishes with minimal breakage and wiping spills to prevent falls.
Must know special procedures relating to and show an understanding of modified diets.
Must have the ability to work quickly, efficiently and neatly in assembling food items and beverages on patients' trays. Must be able to complete work in a timely manner to meet deadlines.
Understand food terminology, measurements, and serving information on standardized recipes and regular and modified diets.
Apply knowledge of general sanitation principles to safeguard against spoilage and waste.
Use correct measuring utensils on portion scale to assure accurate portion control.
Must have the ability to conscientiously respond to patients' questions/inquiries and be able to refer them to appropriate areas or personnel.
Must be able to perform tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that require attention to work operations, follow set procedures in accomplishing repetitive assignments and follow an established sequence of work.

The position requires performance of work which involves constant standing, stooping, walking, pushing food carts, and frequent lifting and moving of objects weighing up to 40 pounds**.
WORKING CONDITIONS:**The incumbent is responsible for following defined safety rules to avoid hazards associated with the operation and cleaning of steam and electrical equipment used in Nutrition and Food Services. Must use proper procedures in lifting and moving heavy objects to avoid bruises, strains and other injuries. Must be alert to avoid falls on wet floors, burns and scalds from hot foods and equipment, cuts from sharp objects and injury from improper use of chemicals. Must have ability to work rapidly, yet efficiently to meet meal schedules and time frames. Works in areas subject to change in temperature (refrigerators/freezers) when working in production area. Is required to wear protective clothing provided and follow standards set for proper uniform compliance.
