This position is located in the Surgery and Specialty Care Department of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System facility. The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS) is a teaching hospital providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care
Work Schedule: Permanent, Full Time, Monday-Friday, Schedule will be determined upon clinic need.

Supervisory Medical Support Assistant position is located in the Specialty Care clinics at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. You will be an integral member of a team devoted to providing the best possible care to our nation's veterans and helping the employees of the Minneapolis VA Health Care System meet our mission.
The Supervisory Medical Support Assistant at this level plans and directs programs at medical centers and/or satellite outpatient clinics and has full supervisory responsibility for supervising at least 25 subordinates and 3 team leaders. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met; evaluating new products, equipment, and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations; identifying educational or training needs; making final decisions on selections; evaluating performance, and taking disciplinary action when necessary and other duties as assigned. The employee has full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the MSA's activities. Responsible for extracting and analyzing data in order to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management.
In addition, the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are required:
1. Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties which includes assignment of work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
2. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established policies and regulations.'
3. Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training.
4. Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs.

Specialized Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-07. Experience at the GS-07 grade level includes, but is not limited to, the following: assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures; distributing and balancing workload; creating and maintaining employee work schedules; orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current employees; ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and acting as liaison between MSA and staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts.
Grade Determinations: There is no education substitute at the GS-08 level.

The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate's education and experience and recommend the step at which the candidate will be placed in that specific grade. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.
