Summary

The Supervisory Psychiatrist will oversee the General Mental Health (GMH) section within the Mental Health Service for the El Paso VA Healthcare System. The Supervisory Psychiatrist will plan, develop, coordinate, direct and evaluate the section. The position directly reports to the Chief of Mental Health Services.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 08:00 am - 04:45 pm

THIS IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY POSITION AND CAN BE FILLED WITH EITHER A PSYCHIATRIST, NURSE PRACTITIONER, PSYCHOLOGIST, OR SOCIAL WORKER.**

Responsibilities

Perform a wide-range of management functions;

Develop and implement a performance improvement plan, continuing education and other quality improvements activities;

Insure accreditation compliance of the unit;

Manage and Supervise unit staff;

Conduct patient evaluations and giving therapeutic treatment to patients;

Develop productivity standards appropriate for the program;

Work collaboratively with other disciplines and supervisors;

May serve as a member of a number of facility and VISN level committees;

Formulate policy and operating procedures ensuring compliance with VA regulations, statues and the standards of requirements of various internal and external reviews and accrediting bodies;

Conducts and directs special studies and analyses of complex problems relating to staffing requirements, space, equipment utilization, organization alignment, and other areas of concerns.

Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

* Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

* Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

* Proficiency in spoken and written English.

* Physical requirements outlined below.

Preferred Experience:

Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry. Skilled clinician with administrative experience at the program level or greater

Reference:

VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:

Light Lifting (under 15 pounds); Light Carrying (under 15 pounds); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (1 hour); Standing (1 hour); Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Hearing (Aid Permitted); Working Indoors; Primarily sedentary; Working closely with others.
