The incumbent serves as a Lead Medical Support Assistant in the Division of Hospital and Specialty Medicine (DHSM) at the VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective administrative support of outpatient clinics at the Health Care System.
Major Duties include, but are not limited to:
Coverage for staff who are absent
Training of new and less experienced MSA's
Ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments
Providing guidance to staff members to include change in policies and procedures
The Lead MSA works as a liaison between management and staff MSA to ensure efficient and accurate scheduling of outpatient visits and associated tests for patients, conducts regular, informal reviews of area documentation and techniques to ensure accuracy and efficiency, ensures backlog is being addressed, reviews and monitors reports of consult status, encounters, and providers orders.

One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6).
GS-07 Lead MSA Experience - One (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-06) that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position which includes, but not limited to: assuring coverage of all areas of responsibility; conducting ongoing reviews to ensure quality of work; ensuring accurate and timely scheduling of appointments; providing guidance to staff members to include changes in policies and procedures; distributing and balancing workload; creating and maintaining employee work schedules; orienting and providing on the-job training for new and current employees; ensuring all training requirements are met; organizing the work structure of his/her assigned areas; and acting as a liaison between MSA and staff in order to resolve day to day conflicts.Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for the GS-06 Advanced MSA:
Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines
Still in communicating with individuals in order to obtain the desired effect, ensuring compliance with established policies and regulations
Ability to provide staff development and training
Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage priorities, and coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely manner. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrating an understanding of the impact of incomplete work
Ability to review and monitor data to ensure all reports are complex and accurate
