Summary

This position is located in the Surgical Service and accountable to the Chief, Surgical Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Orthopedic Surgery while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.

Participates in and/or manages all aspects of a general orthopedic surgery program, to include inpatient and outpatient clinical, administrative, academic, and research components if warranted.

Manages patient care workload within available staffing, which may include fee basis physicians, consultant physicians, contracted physicians, physician assistants, and may include surgical residents.

Works effectively with Surgical Service administrative staff, Anesthesiology Section, Operating Room/Recovery Room Team, and the Surgical Clinic team.

Performs the administrative components of patient care management such as: provides dictation of progress notes, OP reports, discharge summaries, signatures, and consultation referrals for inpatients and outpatients, etc.

Provides surgical treatment.

Supervises and trains surgical residents if available.

Responds to patient telephone calls, informs patients of test results, renews prescriptions, gives telephone/email advice to other provides and performs administrative duties.

Basic computer skills are required using VistA or CPRS for ordering and making entries into the electronic medical record.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday with variable hours and rotating weekends and call coverage.

Responsibilities

The North Texas VA Healthcare System is actively recruiting for a full time Physician (Orthopedic) for the Dallas Medical Center. To meet the qualifications of this position, applicants should have clinical and surgical orthopedic experience, subspecialty training is also a plus, but not required. Routine performance of VA specific disability evaluations (Compensation and Pension exam) is also mandatory.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

* Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

* Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

* Proficiency in spoken and written English.

* Physical requirements outlined below.

* Board certification in Orthopedic Surgery.

* Background in the full range of Orthopedic procedures to include surgical procedures.

Lifting up to 35 pounds for 8-12 hours, intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds) for 8-12 hours, intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient; Handling Policy (PCS-026) except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care;pulling for 8-12 hours, intermittently;pushing for 8-12 hours, intermittently;reaching above the shoulders for 8-12 hours, intermittently;both hands required;walking 8-12 hours, intermittently;standing 8-12 hours, intermittently;kneeling 8-12 hours, intermittently;repeated bending for 8-12 hours intermittently;climbing and use of both legs and arms for 8-12 hours, intermittently;both legs required;near vision correctable at 13-16 to Jaeger 1 to 4;far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye; ability to distinguish basic colors;hearing (aid permitted);specific hearing requirements;and other: twisting, simple grasp and fine manipulation.
