Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital (http://www.hines.va.gov/), located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147 acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management and fiscal services.

Located on a 147-acre campus 12 miles west of downtown Chicago's beautiful skyline. The Hines VA is the largest VA in Illinois where more than one million Veterans live. On any given weekday, more than 2,000 Veterans come to the main hospital campus for outpatient services. Responsibilities

The RN who works in the Cardiac/Medial Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Interventional Unit (CMICU/CIU) must maintain ACLS certification. They are members of the Cardiac Arrest Team. The RN provides care for the following diagnoses but not limited to: Sepsis, Status Post Cardiac Arrest/Rapid Response events, Acute Renal Failure, Pneumonia, Stroke, Seizure Disorder, Diabetic Ketoacidosis, Acute Myocardial Infarction, Liver Failure and complications, GI bleed, Hematology/Oncology conditions, Post-Op Surgical Patients, Acute Hypertensive Crisis, Chest Pain, Congestive Heart Failure and patient requiring antiarrthymic drugs. The RN duties include:

Recognizes early signs and symptoms of cardiac and pulmonary distress. They follow ACLS and AACN protocols when treating lethal arrhythmias and appropriately intervene when there are significant changes in patients' condition.

Knowledgeable regarding administration/dosage of cardiac/emergent drugs and vasopressor agents. Assess hemodynamic status, initiates and titrates to maintain normotensive readings.

Assesses and performs pulmonary hygiene for all patients.

Assesses and collaborates with physicians regarding ventilator weaning. Maintains protocols and monitors patient during process.

Assists with bedside procedures such as but not limited to insertion of invasive lines and maintains integrity of various lines and devices.

Operates various pieces of equipment, but not limited to cardiac monitors, invasive monitoring lines, CRRT, IABP, Endotool, Infusion Pumps and Safe Patient Handling Equipment that are specific to the ICU.

Maintains and enforces all Infection Control Standards.

Assesses and monitors various Critical patients and intervenes when appropriate.

Monitors and assesses patients from Cardiac Catheterization Lab who have had various procedures, AICD, Pacemaker, Angioplasty, and Ablation. Recognize signs and symptoms of distress and initiate appropriate interventions.

Provides a safe environment for all patients with altered sensorium due to medication or acute/chronic illness and maintain protocols to ensure patient safety.

Maintains protocols regarding End of Life Issues/processes and assists with terminal weaning process. Provides emotional support for families and patient.

Adheres to hospital policy, SOP, Protocols and Guidelines regarding documentation in the electronic chart (PICIS) and other approved documents released; alteration or deletion of sensitive data are unacceptable.

Communicates timely and effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

Acts as a patient Advocate. Relates courteously and appropriately to all internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience: Current BLS certification (American Heart Association)

Current ACLS

Minimum of 3 years recent (within the past 5 years) experience in an Intensive Care Unit or Emergency Department

CCRN, CVN, CMC preferred but not required

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
