The selectee for this position will serve as a Physical Scientist in the Operations Department of NAVAL ICE CENTER.

Responsibilities

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

Analyzes visible, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, passive microwave, and altimeter data to locate and identify sea ice worldwide.

Produces ice analysis and ice forecasts in digital or message format on global, regional, or tactical scale using approved World Meteorological Organizational symbology.

Utilizes ice model data, climatology records, and current synoptic analysis to produce ice forecasts and outlooks.

This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. Must be willing and able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

This position is mission essential and may require overtime.

Weekend/Holiday work will be required on a rotational basis.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience for GS-09

In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-07) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position such as;

- Experience interpreting visible, infrared, synthetic aperture radar, scatterometer, and passive microwave imagery.

- Experience using Geographical Information Systems.

- Experience working directly with various customers.

- Experience compiling and presenting data.
