Officially established in October 2006, the Orlando VA Medical Center serves more than 105,000 Veterans in Central Florida and includes a 120-bed Community Living Center, two Mental Health Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs/Domiciliaries (60-beds located at the Lake Nona Campus and 58-beds at the Lake Baldwin Campus), three large multi-specialty Satellite Outpatient Clinics in Orlando (Lake Baldwin campus), Viera and Daytona Beach, and four Community-Based Outpatient Clinics located in Clermont, Kissimmee, Orange City, and Tavares. The new medical center at Lake Nona is open for outpatient and inpatient services and will continue to expand inpatient beds, Emergency Services, and other specialty services throughout 2017. As VA's newest state-of-the-art health care facility, Orlando's 65-acre medical campus encompasses 134 acute inpatient beds, providing complex Medical/Surgical/Mental Health specialty care, advanced diagnostic services, and a large multispecialty outpatient clinic.

Responsibilities

The Orlando VA Medical Center is seeking several Intermittent/Per Diem Registered Nurses (RNs) to help care for our veteran patients visiting the Emergency Department at our new, tertiary medical center. These RNs would have to be experienced and willing to commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per pay period, one weekend shift a month and one major holiday. The RN in the Emergency Department demonstrates successful nursing practice in the emergency department characterized by using sound clinical judgment in the assessment/reassessment, analysis, nursing diagnosis, planning of interventions, outcome identification, and evaluation of human responses of individuals to care/treatment. He/she would be skilled in triage and prioritize; emergency operations preparedness, stabilization and resuscitation; crisis intervention for unique patient populations, such as sexual assault survivors and mental health emergencies; provisions of care in uncontrolled or unpredictable environments; direct the delivery of nursing care and leadership provided through assignment, delegation and supervision of ancillary staff and through committee participation, patient care and discharge instructional teaching activities, and demonstrated ability to function as a preceptor to other nurses. The RN will report to the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department, VAMC Orlando.

Work Schedule: Shift, weekend and holiday rotation is required. There will be irregular tours with rotation to other shifts as patient care needs require.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

US Citizenship and English language proficiency required.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the US or in the District of Columbia.

BLS and ACLS required.

Preferred Experience: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing highly desirable, with a Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field preferred.

A minimum of three (3) years of related experience in the Emergency Department highly desired.

CEN strongly preferred.

Demonstrated ability in previous assignments to make critical decisions in stressful environments.

Demonstrated dependability for duty and flexibility in work assignments and hours in previous assignments.

Knowledge of computer systems and standard software programs.

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent of the position performs direct patient care and must meet the below physical requirements to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Lift 45 lbs. or over, Carry 45 lbs. or over, Straight pulling, Pushing, Reaching above shoulders, use of fingers and both hands, Walking, Standing, Kneeling, Repeated bending, Near vision (correctable), Far vision (correctable), Ability to distinguish basic colors, Ability to distinguish shades of colors, Hearing, Emotional stability. This is a testing-designated position, subject to random pre- and post-employment testing for illegal drug use, Environmental Factors: Inside work, Constant noise, Dust, Fumes, smoke or gases, Working closely with others, Protracted or irregular hours of work, Exposure to infectious diseases. This is position is designated as a random drug testing position.
