The Dental Assistant positions are located at the Syracuse VA Medical Center Dental Clinic, aligned under the Surgical & Diagnostic Care Line at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse, New York.
The dental assistant performs patient care and a full range of duties with indirect supervision from the lead or supervisory dental assistant or the treating dentist. Performing procedures as assigned with independence and some complex patient procedures are performed under indirect supervision of more experienced dental assistants or dental supervisor.
Duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
Shows courtesy, respect, and positive attitude for patients, co-workers and the public.
Provides assistance to customers with questions or concerns, provides service as necessary.
Sets up surgery suite for planned dental procedures and cleans dental unit for timely turnover.
Prepares dental medications and impression materials per manufacturers instructions.
Maintains specialty dental equipment per manufacturer instructions and dental service standards.
Exposes both standard and specialty dental imaging.
Demonstrates proper infection control procedures.
Assists in filling gaps in the doctor's schedule due to late cancelations and failed appointments.
Assists patients in scheduling appointments.
Follows computer security regulations.
Monitors patient vital signs and condition during invasive treatment and during recovery period.
Removes plaque and soft debris from removable prostheses.
Performs other duties, as assigned.

The basic requirements of the position are below.
United States Citizenship:
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens that are proficient in both written and spoken English.
Experience & Education:
Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides familiarity with the work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.
An equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying.
Radiologic Procedures Certification:
Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board.
Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examination developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry,
Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DOD).
Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification of Radiologic competence may be given a one year temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(a)(1)(D). This appointment cannot be extended. Applicants appointed in this manner must become certified before their one year appointment expires. Should certification be obtained, the applicant would be eligible to convert to a permanent appointment. Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination.
A Certification from the DANB (Dental Assistant National Board) is preferred, but not required.
There is no education or experience needed beyond the basic requirements.
In addition to the basic requirements, one (1) year experience at the next lower level, OR 2 years of education above high school that included completion of a dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSA's: Basic knowledge of infection control and safe instrument handling, basic knowledge of dental procedures and medical emergencies, ability to perform basic radiographic image capture and processing/retrieval, basic knowledge of maintenance, care and storage of dental equipment, and basic knowledge of patient privacy requirements.
(1) In addition to the requirements at GS-4 above, applicants must demonstrate at least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level OR (2) Successful completion of a full- four (4) year course of study that included or was supplemented by completion of a dental assistant program by CODA.
In addition to meeting paragraph (1) or (2) above, the applicant must demonstrate the following KSA's:
* Knowledge or anatomy and ability to evaluate diagnostic quality,
* Knowledge of common medical emergencies and vital signs measurement,
* Ability to learn and utilize software programs used within VHA, and
* Basic communication skills to provide patient instructions according to established protocol.
Must have one or more years of specialized work experience, equivalent to the GS-5 level above. This work experience includes, but is not limited to:
* Knowledge of anatomy,
* Ability to evaluate diagnostic quality,
* Knowledge of medical emergencies and vital signs measurement,
* Knowledge of instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures,
* Knowledge of software programs,
* Ability to communicate.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06.
