Summary
The Miami VA Medical Center is looking for a Medical Technician to serve as a floater within the Pathology and Laboratory Service. The Medical Technician will maintain competency in all the areas they are to cover and will perform complex analytical testing procedures independently. The Medical Technician will perform established and new difficult and complex laboratory tests and examinations which involve very fine distinctions.

Responsibilities
The Medical Technician independently plans and carries out assignments, develops techniques to be used, coordinates work with others and informs the technical supervisor of progress and problems that he/she cannot solve. The technician uses complex judgment and independent decision making skills in interpreting and selecting corrective actions for quality issues, customer service incidents, instrument malfunctions and irregular results. Testing methodologies employed by the technician within the discipline of Chemistry include, but are not limited to, urinalysis with microscopic examination including confirmation tests, manual tests and automated specialized instrumentation; colorimetric analytical testing procedures; nephrolomethic methodologies; fluorescent polarization immunoassay (FPIA); and microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA). The Medical Technician performs procedures within the discipline of Microbiology which include, but are not limited to, setup and processing of specimens for culture, identification and sensitivity testing. Procedures performed with the discipline of Hematology include, but are not limited to, complete blood cell counts (CBC) processing in blood cells count analyzer including white, red blood, platelet counts, hematocrit, hemoglobin, blood cell differential counts and flow cytometry procedures to identify anemia's, leukemia's, viral and bacterial infections. The Medical Technician will prepare reagents, assemble equipment and verifies correct instruments operation. Operates, calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, validates and maintains instruments. Reports all medical alerts according to established guidelines. The Medical Technician also conducts necessary quality control procedures and ensures all quality control results fall within limits before releasing patient's results.

Time-In-Grade Requirement
: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-7 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:
Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-7: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in Federal Service. This experience must be close to the work of this job that has given you the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of the Medical Technician (Laboratory). Examples of experience includes: (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemistry, micro biology, hematology, urinalysis and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g. biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled.
OR
Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in a subject appropriate to the position to be filled? (Transcript Required) (You must submit a transcript at the time of application. Education cannot be credited without a transcript.)
OR
You must possess a combination of specialized experience and successfully completed education to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at the Grade 7 level. (You must submit a transcript at the time of application. Education cannot be credited without a transcript.)

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave
