The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. These facilities provide some of the world's finest medical care and cutting-edge technology.

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital with an affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine which provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Our Health Care System operates over 800 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary - all to serve more than 67,000 enrolled Veterans.

The incumbent of this position will serve as an Electronics Technician responsible for the engineering, installation, and ongoing operational support of non-medical electronic equipment and systems at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. He/She is assigned to the Electronics Shop of Engineering Service.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Independently researches, designs, redesigns, configures, installs, modifies, upgrades, troubleshoots, repairs, aligns, programs, and integrates as needed highly complex electronics systems and subsystems used throughout the health care system.

Determines the degree life safety systems are to be shut down to avoid false alarms while continuing an acceptable level of protection for the building and its occupants.

Serves in a consultative capacity to VA construction staff and construction contractors regarding protection of and/or maintenance of systems in occupied buildings.

Uses basic knowledge of TCP/IP networking and telecommunications practices to work with OI&T staff and telecommunications contractors to establish, document, and maintain open channels of communication between the VAPAHCS main site and all satellite facilities for equipment that is networked between sites.

Prepares both routine and special written reports covering systems and equipment tests, maintenance records, inventories of equipment, parts and supplies, and fire alarms event histories.

Do you possess experience installing, configuring, maintaining or repairing at least 2 of the following systems: Nurse Call, fire alarm, paging/2-way radio, MATV/CCTV systems, intrusion/duress alarms, patient wandering system?

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-09) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

· Installing equipment in accordance with plans, specifications, and detailed instructions, or reinstalling repaired or modified systems.

· Making measurements to diagnose malfunctions to ensure equipment operates within prescribed standards.

· Interpreting and modifying maintenance standards related to electronic and communication systems.

· Developing maintenance standards and procedures, testing and evaluating new or modified systems.

OR

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-11 level. For education to qualify, applicants must possess a Ph.D or OR have completed 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree in a major field of study which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position OR LL.B or J.D., if related.

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-11 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 18 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-09. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.
