This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT

Active, standing or walking and climbing of steps, lifting up to 75 pounds, working around and climbing on machinery such as locomotives, dozer, grader, rail cars and loaders. Strenuous effort is involved in shoveling coal spillage or ballast for rail track or when removing ice and snow from crossings and switches, removal and replacement of ties, rails, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Exposed to temperatures up to 120 degrees from boilers and down to -60 degree outside arctic winter weather. At times subject to considerable amounts of coal dust and may be required to wear protective equipment. Subject to noise of machinery and is required to wear hearing protection devices. Subject to cuts, scrapes and bruises from equipment and tools. Works both inside and outside all year. Inside work area somewhat dirty and greasy. Subject to dermatitis from contact with solvents, lubricants and fuels. Danger of slipping and falling between moving cars while performing braking duties. Danger of severe injury from moving parts such as a coupling devices and wheels. Subject to dangerous fumes when servicing preco heaters.

Have the ability to perform the most difficult and complex tasks of a Coal and Rail Equipment Operator (MVO) including operating and maintaining coal crusher, bucket conveyors, magnetic conveyors, grizzlies, and horizontal scraper type conveyors; operating wheeled loaders or forklifts while performing rail maintenance; performing a full range of brakeman and switchman duties necessary for the movement of railroad equipment and rolling stock; spotting freight, coal and fuel tanker cars to be loaded or unloaded; using standard hand and lamp signals to control all movement of locomotive with or without cars; using standard coupling procedures, coupling and uncoupling cars while checking to ensure couplers are properly connected and safe to use; connecting all hoses to ensure air brakes are operational and operating hand brakes and/or block wheels of cars; performing switch adjustments, removal and replacement of ties, rails, switches and ballast; and performing leveling and lining tracks, and installing gage rods, as necessary.

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate enough experience in your application to show you possess sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position at the level for which applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge to operate and maintain conveyor systems; knowledge of security, fire, and environmental regulations; knowledge of safety required in rail/coal procedures; knowledge of stock piling coal.

2. Knowledge of all types of railroad cars.

3. Ability to use hand and lamp signals.

4. Ability to perform track and rail maintenance.

5. Knowledge to use various track and rail tools such as shovels, pick, wrenches, spike mauls, spike pullers, prybars, power saws and drills, hydraulic tampers, and other related rail tools.

6. Skill and ability to safely operate heavy equipment (i.e. dump trucks, tractor-trailers. loaders and dozers, forklifts) with GVW over 32,000 pounds around close proximity to buildings and structures, in maintenance yards, on installation roadways, etc.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
