The Augusta Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center is a two-division Medical Center that provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. The Medical Center is affiliated with the Georgia Regents University, Augusta, GA and as such integrates teaching, research, and advanced patient care, making it an attractive academic medical center. Responsibilities

-Assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of disorders affecting the arterial and venous vascular system. Primary duties include, but are not limited to, carotid and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound.·

-Provide patient care and safety throughout exams.

-Advise radiologists or referring physicians of significant abnormalities that would require immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.

-Perform examinations of the abdomen, head, neck, chest and extremities, and retroperitoneal space for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assists in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.

-Operate complex ultrasound and Transcranial Doppler equipment, Doppler systems, Parks Flo Lab (or similar), printers/recorders, and other patient assessment equipment.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday (multiple shifts); 7:00-3:30; 7:30-4:00, 8:00-4:30; May work on call as required by service.

Physical Requirements: Light Lifting (under 15 lbs); Light Carrying (under 15 lbs); Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13 to 16 to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Hearing (aid permitted).

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Minimum of (3) years of vascular ultrasound experience that include carotid/TCD.

Completion of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) accredited program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, American Medical Association (AMA) approved school of ultrasonography.

Posses an American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification.

Posses an American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification for Registered Vascular Technologist. (RVT) or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS).

Posses a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.

Prior experience in General Ultrasound.

Grade Determinations: one (1) year of creditable experience that demonstrate the use of knowledge, skills and abilities of a Medical Instrument Technician (vascular technician/ vascular sonographer) comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-08), This experience includes performing the full range of vascular ultrasound procedures and tests to include carotid and intracranial procedures; experience performing the most complex and non-routine examinations to make appropriate adjustments in establishing procedures and techniques to obtain results required for clinical diagnosis and documentation; and the ability to provide oversight and/or guidance to other technicians.

In addition to meeting basic requirements, applicants at this grade level must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*). If selected for the position KSAs need to be completed on plain paper, with a narrative description of experience, education and training as related to each skill.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) based on your application for this position.

1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to vascular ultrasonography.

*2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.

3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

*4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.

*5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
