PA's may assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protection from disease, and manage patient within the age group of their supervising physician. PA's may admit patients to hospital. May also provide care to patients in the intensive care setting in conformance with unit policies. General scope of practice may include but not limited to the following below:
Performance of history and physical exam; Performs or orders preventive and diagnostic tests and procedures based on patient age/history; Identifies health and medical risk factors; Establishes priorities to meet presenting health/medical needs and develops treatment plan; Apply, remove, and change dressings and bandages; Counsel and instruct patients, families and caregivers as appropriate; Dictate discharge summaries; Direct care as specified by medial staff-approved protocols; Implement palliative and end-of-life care through evaluation, modification, and documentation according to patient's response to therapy, changes in condition, and therapeutic interventions to optimize patient outcomes; Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions when appropriate; Orders additional diagnostic tests (if needed) and selects appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic; interventions;

Perform urinary bladder catheterization (short term and indwelling), e.g Robinson, coude, Foley; Perform venous punctures for blood sampling, cultures, and IV catheterization; Record progress notes; Assists in the operating room under the supervision of an attending physician; Provides on call service

Further, the PA candidate for Chief Grade will have demonstrated all the requirements of one or more of the following categories: Management/Administrative, Clinical Proficiency, Professional Development and Research.
Experience / Education
Generally, an individual in this grade is able to demonstrate the behaviors listed in the areas below after 5 years of professional practice as a PA; AND
The minimum education for this grade is a Master's Degree from a PA training program accredited by ARC-PA or in a health-related field of study. However, experience as a PA may be substituted for the Master's degree where the individual has an equivalent knowledge of the profession and has successfully undertaken a combination of difficult or complex assignments in several clinical, administrative, research and educational arenas which required a high degree of competence.
