DEFINITION:
Heads a refrigeration unit comprised of journey level and sub-journey level refrigeration mechanics.
Essential Job Functions
Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects the work of refrigeration mechanics, apprentices and helpers in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment involving modulating and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers and duct stats.
Makes periodic inspections of existing refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Inspects work in progress to ensure completion meets time limits and acceptable quality standards.
Inspects contract work as needed.
Assigns and distributes work orders and work request.
Prepares labor and material estimates and requisitions for tools, materials and supplies; keeps time and material cost records.
Ascertains that code requirements and safety regulations are followed.
Performs journey level refrigeration and air conditioning work.
Reviews all work orders before andafter completion.
Orders and pick-up parts for the job.
Coordinates with other trade shops as needed.
Attends mandatory meetings and trainings that are essential to the department.
Drives automotive equipment to work sites.
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years ofjourney level* experience at the level of the County class of Refrigeration Mechanic** in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of commercial and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning systems involving modulating and safety controls, thermostats, humidifiers and duct stats.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required in order to carry out job-related essential functions.
A California Class A or B Driver License may be required.
License Information:
Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
CERTIFICATE:
An Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)*** approved Universal Technician Certificate in compliance with Federal license requirements as provided in Chapter V, Section 608.
PHYSICAL CLASS III:
Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Vision : Keen color perception.

*Journey-level is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulation, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.
**Experience at the level of County of Los Angeles class of Refrigeration Mechanic is defined as performing journey-level refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, and ventilation tasks in accordance with standard trade practices.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
Part I
- An evaluation of training and experience based upon application information weighted 50%.
Part II
- AnAppraisal of Promotability which will measure the applicants' knowledge and skills, problem solving, written and oral communication, dependability, and supervision, weighted 50%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on each weighted part of the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
Appointees may be required to work any shift
including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
