This position is within VISN 19- Rocky Mountain Network at the VA Montana Health Care System (Patient Care Service, CBOC) in Ft. Harrison, MT. The actual location for this position is Glendive, MT. The purpose of this position is to provide Outpatient Phlebotomy, Sample Accessioning and processing.

Responsibilities
Selecting the acceptable orders for collection and contacting provider if additional information is needed.
Drawing venous blood samples from outpatients for requested laboratory tests, using proper techniques and collection materials assuring collection of blood specimen.
Verifying accuracy and completeness of the request and submitting the samples for laboratory services.
Entering requests and information needed into the computer with attention to detail on patient identification and multiple order numbers.
Answering incoming calls for laboratory services and referring the caller to a technical specialist as needed.
Packaging and shipping containers via UPS software and courier service, checking sample shipping boxes for stray samples and packages for return to Fort Harrison Laboratory services.

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday - 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM or as agreed upon with the possibility of extended hours and weekends.
NOTE:
Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test results is received.

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE:
Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal service. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes: providing direct patient personal care and nursing assistance in a healthcare environment (e.g., body/oral hygiene, dressing/undressing, toileting, measures vital signs, collects urine/stool/sputum specimens, dressing changes, triage, nasal cultures, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology and patient care equipment terminology and use; and recording patient results in a computerized medical database. Note: a highly qualified candidate will document the above and have experience performing blood drawing on patients. See the duties section of this vacancy announcement for detailed information. Possess successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in medical, health or other directly related fields of the position.

Physical Requirements:
The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for extended periods of time, bending, standing, lifting, walking, stooping and stretching.
The work involves regular and recurring risks associated with working in a clinical laboratory, such as working with infectious substances, contagious diseases and irritant reagents. The technician must wear protective clothing such as lab coats, face shields and gloves.
Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:
Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
