Responsibilities
The Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center is actively recruiting for an Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) for Gastroenterology (GI), located in Columbia, SC. The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) will serve as the first-lime supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their units, ensuring that the subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of subordinates. He/she will act as the Nurse Manager during times of their absence. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for the performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction, patient and employee safety, standards of care and practice, etc. He/she actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. He/she assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. In addition, he/she assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction (80% clinic and 20% administration). He/she is administratively responsible to the Nurse Manager and responsible for other team members, i.e. Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. Performs other related duties as required by Nurse Manager.
Work Schedule
: Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm; 7:30am to 4:00pm; 8:00am to 4:30pm; 9:00am to 5:00pm. Tour of duty to be determined as patient care dictates; Include Saturdays (as workload dictates).

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR
In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
BSN, 4 years nursing experience previous GI experience; Moderate Sedation experience, SGNA certification, management experience. Minimum of 2 years in Endoscopy experience; managerial or charge nurse experience
Grade Determinations
: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements:
Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1 - 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 4 hours); Standing (up to 4 hours); Repeated bending (up to 2 hours); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13 to 16; Hearing (aid permitted).
The Assistant Nurse Manager is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager of Gastroenterology. The ANM will provide a high level of leadership and support for all range of administrative, material management, and equipment services necessary to support direct care providers while in the clinic and/or procedure area. This includes initiation of processes to assess the needs of the department and assist with planning programs needed to meet and/or improve the delivery of care. Ensure high standard of nursing care to patients in the department. Provide technical assistance during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Provide clinical assistance in the Gastroenterology Clinic to ensure continual flow of care.
1. Assist in managing patient care operation and daily clinic operations for endoscopy and clinic
2. Role model collaborative leadership and communicates effectively
3. Monitors quality of care and nursing practice
4. Develops and provides education to staff to meet specific patient care needs
5. Participates in clinic based staffing activities to include clinic flow, staffing clinical areas, incorporation of best staffing practices in the clinical setting
6. Complies with organizational expectations: policies, standards of practice, and procedures
7. Possess meticulous attention to detail, good communication, and interpersonal skills.
8. The GI ANM may be required to work weekends if clinics are operating on weekends
9. May serve as Charge Nurse
10. Administrative time to be provided as determined by the Nurse Manager
