The VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) consists of three inpatient facilities located at Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Livermore, plus seven outpatient clinics in San Jose, Fremont, Capitola, Monterey, Stockton, Modesto, and Sonora. These facilities provide some of the world's finest medical care and cutting-edge technology.

VAPAHCS is a teaching hospital with an affiliation with the Stanford University School of Medicine which provides a rich academic environment including medical training for physicians in virtually all specialties and subspecialties. Our Health Care System operates over 800 beds, including three nursing homes and a 100-bed homeless domiciliary - all to serve more than 67,000 enrolled Veterans.

Responsibilities

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 8:00pm; every other weekend and rotate other shifts as required for patient needs.

The Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder (SCI/D) Unit is a 43 bed Acute Care unit which includes four ventilator beds. The Registered Nurse is a skilled practitioner with specialized knowledge of the pathophysiology, psychosocial and complex care needs of individuals with a spinal cord injury and disorder. The RN provides direct care for SCI/D patients with complex medical and surgical needs who are admitted for acute spinal cord, exacerbation of previous injury, pre-operative and post-operative procedures.

The role of the SCI/D RN is to work within an interdisciplinary framework to support and maintain the health, independence, quality of life, and productivity of veterans with spinal cord injury and disorders throughout their lives. These objectives are accomplished by providing excellence in quality of care and outcomes, sustaining medical and surgical care, promoting comfort and relief of pain, and patient and family education.

The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Proficient in assessment skills, critical thinking, time management, and organization.

Strict adherence to sterile technique, infection control and safety practices.

Knowledge about a wide range of medical diagnoses and the pharmaceutical treatments, as well as the interdisciplinary plan or care.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: United States Citizenship.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency, and accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) which changed to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN

) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE

) at the time the program was completed; OR the completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005/27, Appendix G6). OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (i.e., licensure) as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or the District of Columbia. Note: Provide your RN registered license number on your application.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.
