Physical demands:The work is primarily sedentary. However, there may be some physical exertion such as walking; hiking; standing; bending; carrying of items such as books and backpacks; driving an automobile or off-highway vehicle; operating a small boat, etc.

Work environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office. Occasional travel may be required. The position may be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to inclement weather and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc. The incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or designated by the Safety Officer.

Responsibilities

This position serves as the Outdoor Recreation Planner within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, located at Kanab, Utah. The purpose of this position is to apply outdoor recreation expertise to the inventory, study, data analysis, protection, maintenance, and management of the area's recreation resources. At the lower levels, the incumbent will be assigned work designed to further develop and refine their knowledge and skills. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently. At the full performance level major duties include but are not limited to:

Managing the recreation program which includes developed sites, dispersed recreation, Wilderness and/or Wilderness Study Areas, National Conservation Areas, or other Congressional designations, and oversees the planning and/or operation, maintenance and protection of public use sites and facilities.

Assisting with program budget development, implementation, and reporting.

Administering a recreation special use permit program for commercial, organized group, and concessionaire permits.

Writing and reviewing the recreation and wilderness management portion of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, site plans and other related recreation plans and studies for proposed land use and development.

Serving as the Interdisciplinary Team Leader for complex recreation management projects, and may serve as a work leader for lower graded employees and volunteers.

Developing relationships with community, user groups, and other agencies and seeks to build partnerships, both formal and informal to meet recreation program objectives and build program support.

Occasional travel - At times, travel for field work, meetings and/or training may be required.
